The UK has more people you'd want to know than the US does, but it also has a quite substantial population of truly low and base low-lifes. Is it "yobs" that they call them?

If you've lived in a region of the world like I do that has a significant number of British expats and tourists your overall opinion of them tends to plummet pretty fast. Let's just say that Brits have a better image in the media than what exists in real life. They are basically like mid-western Americans in a lot of ways except more ethnocentric.

Yobs, and chavs are the usual terms, and in Scotland, they're called 'Neds' (as in, 'Non-educated delinquents'). This subculture is causing real and serious problems in the UK. But then again, there's no work to be had for half of them.
In the old days, people like them would have been working in the shipyards and mines. Or they would have joined the military. But too many of them lack the education needed to take on jobs in the IT sector and other areas, so on the dole they go. The military doesn't want them because discipline can't be instilled in them.

There's a TV show called 'My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding" about travelers (Gypsies) in the UK. I highly recommend it for the gawking value.
