Language Translation Apps for Smart Phones

Post Language Translation Apps for Smart Phones
Google Translate now has a free app for smart phones, both IPhones and Androids. It allows speech translation too.

http://www.google.com/mobile/translate/

Another good one that's also free is iTranslate, and it also has voice recognition.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=at.nk.tools.iTranslate

If you can do language translation on a smart phone, then wouldn't that render portable electronic translators obsolete?

These work without internet access or data connection, but they are only for IPhones.

I'm still looking for offline translation apps for Androids.

Here are more language translation apps for smart phones.

http://www.skyscanner.net/news/articles/2010/08/007929-phone-it-in-10-great-translation-apps.html

http://travelingtheworldaccordingtome.com/10-translation-apps-reviewed-forget-being-lost-in-translation-when-traveling-abroad/

Most of them only work if you have a data connection though. The few that work offline are for IPhones. Since I have an Android, I did a search in Google for Android translation apps that work offline, but I could only find one called Jibbigo. However, most of the reviews for it were negative in the Google Play Store.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jibbigo.s2s&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5qaWJiaWdvLnMycyJd

Anyone know any good offline Android translator apps?

I guess for now, I can just make do with offline dictionary apps? Here are English-Chinese offline dictionary apps for Android.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.socialnmobile.dictdata.chinese.stardict&hl=en

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.graf.hanzicidian&feature=also_installed

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.embermitre.hanping.app&feature=related_apps

More:

This free Android app contains offline dictionaries in many languages.

Google translate requires a data connection though but it's good and it's free unlike wordlens which costs an arm and a leg.

I just installed the offline Chinese-English dictionary apps above on my Android and they work great. I highly recommend them. They are free and convenient and work without a data connection. However, the speech function for the words is disabled if you don't have a data connection.

How much internal memory does your new phone have? Reason I ask is cause some android phones have limited storage and sometimes the dictionaries can take up a lot of space.

Not much. It's supposed to have 1 GB internal, but in settings it always says that 380 MB are available (in total that is, without any downloaded apps). But most of that is used up by my apps. I also got several Angry Birds games on my phone. If I removed some of them, it would free up a lot more memory.

I don't get the inconsistency between the internal memory on the box and officially stated, and the actual internal memory that shows up in settings, which is a lot less.

However, you can move most apps to the SD card. On an Android, if you go to Settings, then Apps, and then select the SD Card column, you will see a check mark next to the ones that are installed on the SD card. If it's unchecked, click on it and then select the "Move to SD Card" option.

But even when you do that, every app takes up a little of the internal memory. So you can't move 100 percent of an app to the SD card.

On my dictionary app, when I download language packs, they all go to the SD card, so I don't have to worry about that. Go to Google Play Store and search for "dictionary" and the language that you want to find many apps. Or enter "translation" to find translation apps such as Google Translate.

Btw, if any of you have the Google Translation app on your smart phone, it has greatly improved in that it now allows you to translate entire sentences and paragraphs offline without any wifi or data connection. All you have to do is push the options button and select "Offline Language" and then select the language pack you want. The files are big, but they go into your SD card (if you have one). Once you download the language pack, the app can now translate offline.

You may need to download an update to the app first though. Go to My Apps and see if you need to update it.

The new version also has a thing that takes a picture of a foreign language writing and tries to match it. So if you see a street sign in Chinese, you can take a photo of it with Google Translate and it will try to match it. But this only works if you are connected online or you have a data connection. The speech to text function also only works with a data connection.

You can also enlarge the translated text to full screen to show people you're trying to communicate with.

To get the Google Translation App, go to Google Play Store on your smart phone and search for it.
