Appearance No. 1 preference for ideal wife: survey

More than three out of 10 single men around the world cited appearance as their No. 1 preference for an ideal would-be wife, a survey showed Friday.

According to the survey by Korea's matchmaking company Sunwoo of its 41,036 single male clients from 121 countries, 31.1 percent said appearance is the primary attribute for their ideal spouse, followed by personality with 28.5 percent, occupation or ability with 21.7 percent and family background with 18.7 percent.

The survey was conducted online for the past four years through August, and involved at least 30 men from each country, the company said.

By country, the largest number of single men living in Singapore, or 35.9 percent, cited appearance as their key preference. By continent, those from Europe and Latin America put the highest priority on occupation, with the rest citing appearance, the survey showed.

Among some 33,000 Koreans, the results were similar: 31.4 percent referred to beauty as their primary preference for their future wife, followed by personality with 28.4 percent, occupation with 21.4 percent and family background with 18.8 percent, it showed.

"The survey appears to reflect the fast spread of mass culture for commercial purposes that has caused an appearance-oriented trend across the globe," said Sunwoo chief Lee Woong-jin. (Yonhap)

Keep in mind that this is a survey from a match making group based on its members, and may not reflect the general population which doesn't use online match making services.

Based on survey results, they claim that in Europe and Latin America, they care more for "what do you do for a living" than looks and personality.

Those surveyed also had to select from only the choices given.
Otherwise, they might have expressed a preference for things like:

Won't drown the children in a bathtub.

or perhaps
Won't drown the children in a lake, so that she can resume an affair with another man.

But, yeah, "looks" are good, too.
