Re: Great videos on how to eat healthy in America and avoid

I've heard lots of horror stories about the portion sizes in America :) I'm looking forward to seeing for myself one day.

As someone who has been slim her whole life, I think that eating sensibly and keeping active is all you need to do.

I have never dieted in my life and eat everything I want to, including cakes, ice cream, etc., but I focus on good quality food and don't go overboard.

Trying to think of things that might help me stay slim despite eating what I want...

- I never eat anything sweet unless it's after a meal. So at the most I have two sweet things a day, one after lunch and one after dinner. These can be a bar of chocolate, small cake, yogurt, etc.

- I always buy fresh food every day. I never eat frozen food or canned food. Dinner is always salad with some form of meat. Lunch is usually a sandwich. Fresh food is living food, more satisfying and more full of nutrients. And don't fill up too much on grains.

- Bodies are designed to move. Running is a great form of exercise that clears your mind and helps you to see a bit of nature. Sometimes a skipping rope for 10 minutes is all you need if you are stuck inside the house.

- Care about yourself. If you care about and have respect for your body you will want it at peak condition. Don't allow yourself to get unhealthy or fat, do something about it at the first sign.
When there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you.

You are a very wise woman.

As an American, I can attest to the over sized portion thing but the problem is with people thinking that they have to eat until it's all gone.

While I agree with EVERYTHING that BellaRuth says here, this point in particular is number one in my book:
I always buy fresh food every day. I never eat frozen food or canned food. Dinner is always salad with some form of meat. Lunch is usually a sandwich. Fresh food is living food, more satisfying and more full of nutrients. And don't fill up too much on grains.

Fresh food is very important, not what I call "mystery meat" found in most prepared foods or things full of preservatives and fillers.

I hate to tell you Winston, but fast food does not make you old and ugly. Getting old makes you old. And ugly.... well that's something you don't have to eat fast food to have, some people are born with it.

That being said, fast food has very little to offer our bodies except for a ton of empty calories and things we should never ingest. Not that I don't have the occasional (like maybe 4 times a year) big mac and a small fry but I swear I can feel the difference in how I feel after eating it.

Yeah the portions are large in America. But you can just eat til you're full and then take the rest home as take-out. The thing is though, that the food in restaurants is not organic. It contains processed ingredients, chemicals and GMO's.

Some questions:

Is it true that carbohydrates are what causes people to become fat, and not fat itself?

Is cheese good for you? Is it fattening? I eat a lot of it so I am wondering about this.

Is wheat good for you? If so, is it ok to eat wheat or multi-grain bread, or is all bread bad for you?

I heard that coffee is fattening. But what if you just drink it black without adding anything? Is that ok?

Thanks NinjaPuppy!

Is it true that carbohydrates are what causes people to become fat, and not fat itself?

I personally believe this as I'm quite inspired by the Paleo diet. Carbs usually just bulk you up without adding much nutritional value, fat is necessary for your body and organs. Of course, you'd want good, clean fats.

Is cheese good for you? Is it fattening? I eat a lot of it so I am wondering about this.

It depends on the cheese- mozzarella is so different from roquefort. In short, get a good quality, traditionally-made cheese and just use it to complement and add flavour and I don't think you'll go wrong. Personally I eat quite a bit of goat's cheese and mozzarella and don't find them fattening, but I have them with olives, salad leaves, chicken, etc.

Is wheat good for you? If so, is it ok to eat wheat or multi-grain bread, or is all bread bad for you?

That's a can of worms! I think everyone needs to do their own research on this one.

As far as I can tell, the concensus seems to be that most people have intolerance to modern wheat.

I've cut down on bread and pasta. I've heard bread from supermarkets is pretty bad. On the rare occasions I buy bread I get handmade ciabattas from the local deli which really makes it worth getting! It's popular here to make your own bread but I can't be bothered with all that. Most of the time I eat GM free corn instead of wheat. I prefer corn pasta a million times over, and it has that lovely al-dente texture! Maybe just restrict your bread use and see if you feel any better.

I heard that coffee is fattening. But what if you just drink it black without adding anything? Is that ok?

Not heard of that one.

I think everything in moderation, and enjoy food. Learn to love cooking and eating. Discover new vegetables, spices, cuisines. It's one of my favourite hobbies :) I believe that's the key to getting all the different nutrients you need, feeling satisfied with your meals, and maintaining a healthy weight.
