Has any one noticed this phenomenon?Especially with non-White people in America..or especially if they look black.You have people saying also they are half a nationality which is a logical fallacy because that would require one to be born in two countries at the same time..(i am not talking about people who have duel citizenship)...For example,you will hear a Latina born in the U.S. talking about she is half Mexican and Half Dominican but she was born in New York.




Like the first girl in this dumb video saying "I am not black am and Dominican and Cape Verdian" LOL there i nothing Dominican or Cape Verdian about this chick..and she is Black but above all she is American! I bet she can not even Speak Spanish or Portuguese or Cape Verdian creole but yet she is claiming these nationalities.I know the vid is off my topic though..the rest of the vid is just plain ignorant High School shit not really meant to be taken seriously. I just wanted to use the first girl interviewed as an example..

Plus there is this Troll called Mylittlestarb in the comments section of the vid...who says she is Half Brazilian and Panamanian but was born in TEXAS!..first off it is her mother's Father(the grandfather) who is supposedly Brazilian,her mother is Panamanian and her father is Mexican so she is not even half,she does not speak Portuguese or never even been to Brazil but she trolls black men's pages on youtube a lot ..but any way has anyone noticed this..it is especially common with American women as if claiming all these nationalities that have nothing to really do with them makes them more exotic or something.

Nationality, and self identify garbage like "hispanic" is all human constructions. At the anthropological and biological, there exists an actual scientific way to cateogorize people

Well there is obviously a difference between ethnicity and nationality, but I get what you are trying to say here.

It's pretty much because being "exotic" is what's "in" right now. That and it makes them feel like special little snowflakes.

White people do it just as much to be fair though. Plenty of white people will go "oh i'm irish, italian, german, british, blah blah blah" instead of just saying "white". Then you have people who look completely anglo claiming to be part of a non-white ethnic group because they happen to be 1/8th whatever.

Everyone's gotta be a special little snowflake.

The only thing I can say is if that one didn't grow up in the household emulating that culture for the most part of the parents and/or grand- and/or grrrrreat-grandparents bestowed upon them, then they should only claim "I"m American with such-and-such lineage/ancestry".

For the longest time I am guilty of that, I just recently became comfy with calling myself an "American [of Brazilian and Aruban lineage, which I mention]" as much as I cannot stand the stigmatized idiosyncrasies that come along with "being an American".

I am destined to return to being full-0n Brazilian because I was treated as one and the culture is still beautiful despite some of the backward changes occurring in many parts of it.

I have to stop letting my great-grandparents roll over in the grave. They tried to teach me Brazilian culture, I smacked it down because I was already in the Matrix of the US of Gay even as a child!

If I can learn Spanish and not be accepted by the majority of stateside "Latinos", then I can show gratitude for the legacy of my great-grandparents, country they were from, and self-respect by learning what I was supposed to learn about Brazil from a non-tourist POV.

I believe this has a lot to do with my observation in the other thread that race supersedes nationality in America. It's not enough that most people you meet in America have American citizenship but you have to sub-divide your identity to compete with other artificial groups. It's tribalism.

This means even if you're a recent immigrant from Kenya or something the pressure is strong for you to conform to african-american identity. If that naturalized immigrant from Kenya resists then they have to wear their Kenyan badge with pride as a substitute and find other like minded Kenyan immigrants to form their own political and social bloc. They can't just exist as merely American.

I am guilty of this though. I do tend to say I'm part Venezuelan, part indian from the caribbean People usually think I'm an arab or a persian, then I say no' ... & this is how I tend to explain who I am.

I've noticed this too. Especially with white Americans disregarding their mostly British ancestry and claiming something they're only a small percentage of (e.g. German, Irish, Italian). I don't understand for the life of me why they do this. The British invented & contributed a hell of a lot more to the modern world than those other ethnicities in all fields.

All the above is a mental disorder. Unless you are officially recognized as that nationality by some authority ( preferably of that nationality), you are not that nationality.

I was in Saudi, and we had a Filipino clerk and a Louisiana Creole guy working as a teacher on our base. One day, the Filipino clerk started complaining to me about the teacher who was "speaking in riddles".

He went:

"I asked him a simple question-' What is the nationality of your wife?' And you know what he answered? He said'' Anglo Saxon". Now, what kind of nationality is that? Why couldn't he say," My wife is American; my wife is Canadian?"

He kept on grumbling. He could not understand the American "nationalities".

No. Only in Jus Solis countries (those who declare nationality by birthplace- some 30 countries). In others, you inherit it through parents. In Europe, you can have two nationalities inherited from parents while being born in Mongolia for all they care.

Most countries in the Old World do not give you a nationality just because you were born there. Also, in most countries, nationality and ethnicity are the same. In Japan and Germany, people are Japanese and Germans both by nationality and by ethnicity. You cannot be Japanese of a non Japanese ethnicity. Well, yeah, you could get citizenship, but no one will ever consider you Japanese. And being born there means nothing.

I remember in Ukraine,they distinguish between "a citizen of Ukraine" and "a Ukrainian". One can be a citizen there, but one has no right to call himself Ukrainian unless one has a Ukrainian name and a Ukrainian face. What's a Ukrainian face? They know and they can recognize their own. And just because you were born there, does not make you a Ukrainian.

A German shepherd born in China does not become a Pekingese.

In Britain and in France, it's hypocritical. Yes, you have all the documents saying you are British or French. But behind your back, you are still a "bloody Paki" and "a dirty Arab".

Same in most of the world.

Reminds me of when going into Ethiopia. When in the line for a 3 month visa. They asked what nationality you are. I said American, a women next to me though answered African American. Guy just looked at her and said " So, you are American, OK." I just thought it was funny, cause in other countries. They could give a shit what your race is. If you are an American citizen, you are an American.

"Anglo Saxon" is a bizarre answer anyway you look at it. Personally, I would be "DaFuQ?"

Unless the clerk was conducting a demographic/anthropological research instead of filling in a text box called "nationality of spouse" used in most clerical processing forms.

This is true but in Asia they tend to think of you as whatever asian ethnicity you are. They usually can't wrap their hand around race and nationality distinctions unless you are in a country that is a source for a lot of immigration in the U.S. know what asian-americans are. Koreans call them gyopos. Japanese, nissei. Taiwanese, ABCs. Filipinos, Fil-ams.
