I believe there will be several little ones before the "big" one.
A local power failure (been through enough of those, myself) or other supply disruption is "failure" enough, especially in extreme hot or cold weather.
After Hurricane Katrina, or more recently Hurricane Sandy, or the floods in Colorado, there should be no question about your odds when you rely on yourself vs when you rely on BigDaddyGov or help from random strangers.
