How do you keep topics unread here?

It seems that when I come into a board, and there are threads marked unread, even when I never open the threads, the next time I return, they are all marked red, displaying a white flag next to them rather than an orange one.
Is that a flaw or bug? Why are they marked read when I never opened them, only the folder or I only logged on? What can I do about that?
