Conspiracy Theories Make LOSERS feel like WINNERS

Post by Gali »

If they could get attention without it they would ditch it in a heart beat but they do not have the option. Like incel shooter they shoot at intellectual reality.

Joseph Uscinski: "Conspiracy Theories are for Losers"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daxl7-PFF3w
Professor Uscinski will highlight his analysis of more than a hundred years of data taken from newspapers, surveys, and the internet. The surprising findings address the following questions: Who believes in conspiracy theories and why? Why are some conspiracy theories more popular than others? What are the dangers of conspiracy theories? Are conspiracy theorists prone to violence? How did conspiracy theories affect the 2016 presidential election and how will they affect the United States going forward?

Joseph Uscinski is associate professor of political science at University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida and co-author of American Conspiracy Theories (Oxford, 2014).

conspiracy theories follow a strategic logic: they are tools used by the powerless to attack and defend against the powerful. Conspiracy theories must conform to this logic, or they will not be successful. In this way, conspiracy theories are for losers.
Too bad he didn't just write an article I could read. 55 minutes is a lot of my valuable time to listen to someone talk. Why is it that someone like me, with just a BS behind my name, is capable of expressing himself in writing, but Mr PhD can only communicate via the spoken word?

Not too different from strongly held religious beliefs; it removes the need to try because the way a conspiracy theorist is held back by "the man" or "Satanist Jews", a religious man may be held back by Satan or demons or the Will of God. If it all happens to you due to powers stronger than yourself, what's the point in trying? It's all predetermined. A lazy man's perfect worldview.

Though in science there is no free will and things are predetermined because of the scientific laws.

In this talk, Rob Brotherton provides a psychological perspective on conspiracism, drawing on his own research as well as other insights explored in his book Suspicious Minds: Why We Believe Conspiracy Theories. In particular, research into cognitive biases and heuristics – quirks in the way our brains are wired – suggests that we’re all intuitive conspiracy theorists; some of us just hide it better than others.

Rob Brotherton is an academic psychologist. He completed a PhD on the psychology of conspiracy theories with the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit at Goldsmiths, University of London. He now lives in New York City and teaches classes on conspiracy theories, social psychology, and science communication at Barnard College.
