Emanuel Swedenborg - A Genius Who Revised & Improved Christianity (very positive & resonating)

Post by Winston »

Have any of you heard of Emanuel Swedenborg? He was a genius, philosopher, scientist and writer who had visions in the 1700's about the true nature of God, Jesus, the Bible and Heaven. Many spiritual seekers who discover him say he captures the true essence of what Christianity was originally meant to be before it was perverted and distorted by the orthodox Church institutions.

I looked over some of it and the video podcasts about it on YouTube and it makes a lot of sense and resonates with my soul on a deep level. Alex feels the same way. It certaintly makes a lot more sense than the orthodox version of Christianity, and has a much deeper interpretation that makes more sense and resonates with the soul. It manages to stay positive without going into any New Age claptrap. Some of Swedenborg's theology is simple, but other parts are complicated. Here are some links below if anyone is interested in exploring this.

Wow check this out. The Swedenborg Chapel in Massachusetts has an online site where you can attend virtual church services online. Wow. I never attended one before. They make you feel like you are right there in the service. You can feel the good vibes and energy even through the video screen too. Wow cool. I didn't know you could go to church like this without being there. lol. @fschmidt didn't you say you ran some kind of online Judaism study or church service too?

Here's their most recent virtual chapel service. If you follow it you can feel the divine spiritual good energy right through the screen. Wow. Amazing. (or at least I can, I can't speak for everyone though)

Just saw the full documentary on Swedenborg.

Wow amazing. His accomplishments and inventions ahead of his time are similar to that of Leonardo DaVinci's. So why isn't he of the same fame? Apparently he was very famous in the 1800's, and influenced a lot of famous people, but not sure why not today. Apparently, the movie "What Dreams May Come" was based on Swedenborg's visions of heaven too. Wow I didn't know that. Fascinating. The documentary is must see and will mesmerize you.

Heres a good video by Curtis Childs of the Swedenborg Foundation where he explains the damaging consequences of taking the Bible literally.

What he neglects to mention is that ancient people were not concerned with historical accuracy or literalism. They were focused on metaphorical truths. Religion scholar Reza Aslan explains this in his lectures. Its something important that both Christians and atheists forget and never consider. Tom Harpur also talks about it in his book "the pagan christ" which is a mythicist book. So did the great Joseph Campbell.

I think literalism began with the Roman Catholic Church right? Because without literalism u cant claim authority over people with metaphorical truths only. Is that correct?

Keep in mind that all the greatest geniuses in history like Einstein, Tesla, DaVinci, Swedenborg, Ben Franklin, Thomas Edison, Isaac Newton, Mark Twain, Carl Jung, etc were neither atheists nor Christian fundamentalists. They saw both extremes as hogwash. They all believed in a higher power or God but believed that the bible should be taken metaphorically, not literally. Same as me. So I'm definitely in good company, as the greatest geniuses and minds in history agree with me and hold the same views.

This means that the smarter or more brilliant someone is, the more they see through atheism as hogwash and fundamentalist Christianity as well. Keep that in mind. Its very revealing.

The lesson here is that the truth tends to be in the middle. Not on either extreme. Both Christians and atheists need to understand this. But university debates tend to portray a false dichotomy as if the only two choices were atheism and Christian fundamentalism.

Think about this.

Good video highlighting the differences between Swedenborg Christianity and Evangelical Christianity. The Swedenborg version is a lot more positive and fair of course, and sounds more credible too, especially since we know who Swedenborg was whereas the authors of the Bible were mostly anonymous and dubious.

Emanuel Swedenborg - A Journey into the World of Spirit Between Heaven And Hell

Emanuel Swedenborg, original name (until 1719) Emanuel Swedberg, or Svedberg, (born January 29, 1688, Stockholm, Sweden—died March 29, 1772, London, England), Swedish scientist, Christian mystic, philosopher, and theologian who wrote voluminously in interpreting the Scriptures as the immediate word of God. Soon after his death, devoted followers created Swedenborgian societies dedicated to the study of his thought. These societies formed the nucleus of the Church of the New Jerusalem, or New Church, also called the Swedenborgians.
Early life and works

Swedenborg was born at Stockholm. His father, Jesper Swedberg, was a prominent member of the Swedish clergy, court chaplain, professor of theology in the University of Uppsala, and later bishop of Skara. When the family was ennobled in 1719, it took the name Swedenborg. After graduating from the University of Uppsala in 1709, the young Swedenborg spent five years abroad. He had become fascinated by mathematics and the natural sciences, and to study them he visited England, Holland, France, and Germany, meeting some of the representatives of the new sciences there and learning practical mechanical skills. Swedenborg’s inventive and mechanical genius flowered at this time, and his speculations ranged from a method of finding terrestrial longitude by the Moon to new methods of constructing docks and even to tentative suggestions for the submarine and the airplane.

The life of Emanuel Swedenborg was steeped simultaneously in the rational world of the physical sciences and in a deep Christian faith. He lived during the height of the Enlightenment, a period when intellectuals rejected dogmatic religious teachings in favor of science and reason, and his theology reflects a long struggle to understand the world of spirit through investigation of the physical world. Ultimately, that struggle was resolved when (as he described it) his spiritual senses were opened and he began to interact directly with the denizens of heaven, hell, and the world of spirits in between. Although his theological writings are based on experiences and visions that may seem unbelievable to a modern audience—as they did to many of Swedenborg’s contemporaries—he writes with full awareness of how difficult his accounts may be to accept. In keeping with his early scholarly training, he presents his ideas in a logical order, drawing examples from everyday life as proof of the truth of his words, inviting readers to judge for themselves.

Swedenborg claimed to have been given the ability to travel to heaven and hell and documented his travels in a number of books written in Latin.

In his book on the afterlife he talks about the heaven and hell and the place in between. In this episode we delve in to the world of spirit between heaven and earth.

These may be simply the creative musings of the author or perhaps there is truth in them. I became interested because he is mentioned by William Blake whom Neville Goddard often cites in his lectures.

Whatever you believe you will find this fascinating.
