Now you are comparing apples to oranges. Why do you do that? Development is not operations or support. It's completely different. Do you need to feel right about something so badly you make invalid comparisons?
It depends on what you mean by "operations", dude. I have no idea what kind of IT operations role you have been offered. Managing a cloud infrastructure or a development team also falls under "operations" and usually commands much more than $90K a year.

If,as you say, an "IT operations manager" responsible for US oil payments is only on $90K, I am not surprised that some people are keen to GTFO of Bidenlandia.
I guess I'm more savvy to this sector than you are then. Cheers!

Man, I don't give a rat's a$$ how savvy you are. I am just reporting what I know about the situation of executive jobs in Manila. If you make a third of that, or three times that, good for you.

But yet you still feel compelled to post, even though you don't know the difference between operations/support and development. Badass!!!!

Maybe you don't know the difference between "operations" and "support", since you placed them together, either side of a slash.

Best thing to do is get a high paid contract job and work for 6 months away, then go back. I only met one guy that really was working remotely, because he was always working at night, except on the weekends. 98% of all digital nomads are not making enough money to support themselves. There are a many more remote jobs now than before, so it's a possibility if you had great internet you could potentially work from Philippines.

Yeah, with the spread of Internet it got much easier to have a well-paid job no matter where you currently live.

Yes that is what I am doing right now. I didn't get the job in the Philippines I was taking about earlier, but that is ok. I really had some reservations about the long working hours, and the job stability, and potential problems (not getting paid on time, or what I'm owed). The company had somewhat of a bad reputation for that. I don't want to have to dress up in even business casual every day in a hot and humid tropical environment, even if I do work in an air conditioned office. I don't want to work 8am-6pm six or six and a half days per week. I am just about at the point in my work here in the U.S. where I can make what that company was offering by only working six months here. And I still have weekends off here, LOL. For damn sure I can make it doing 8 months here and taking 4 off in the Philippines. I really need to work on getting some more certs so I can get a remote job here in the U.S., and just take off for the Phils at some point.

In this case ops IS support.
In this case the Philippines are, with India maybe, the countries with the most number of local ops/support jobs. Salaries aren't comparable to those in the US but they can be pretty good when the lower cost of living and the international environment are factored in.

An acquaintance of mine, an Italian man in his thirties, married to a Filipina and with no real IT or software application skills got hired by Accenture, to work on SAP support for US and Italian accounts. He got a monthly salary of P85,000 (gross, around P70,000 net, including the various allowances) and a fully-paid month of training on the SAP modules he needed to know. And he works in BGC, in the typical nice-office-connected-to-high-end-mall set-up.

When I last spoke to him, he wasn't complaining. P70K net is enough to rent a condo and support a family of two (wife and small kid).

One might be better off and better paid with a remote job but, judging from the photos he sent me, he does seem to have an edge in terms of social interactions. Filipinos are definitely not the kinds of people who will shy away from a lunch or dinner get-together.

$1700/month would be a tiny salary for me, even though it's probably great for him and plenty enough to live on. That would be ok to work like that if I were in my 20's or something, but it doesn't make sense for me to sacrifice so much at this point. They were offering $72,000 for the job I interviewed for, which would be managing a remote technical support team. That's comparable to what an technical support manager would make in the area I live in the US. However the hours are longer and other factors I already mentioned. It's ok because like I said, I can easily make that in 8 months here in the US with no stress whatsoever doing what I'm doing now. The real sweet deal would be working for a U.S. company fully remote, and just not tell them where you are. Most of them don't want you working/living overseas because they are evil globohomo control freaks, but you could get away with it.

I too came across a few of these management jobs, in my case managing local software teams. The pay was about that amount, $50-75K, which here is the top-end of a "foreigner salary". Only in one cases I sent my CV to agency and after a couple weeks that said they liked my CV but they found someone from India with more relevant experience for less. Like everywhere else, it's a constant race to the bottom, salary-wise.

As a software developer, I have a slightly different set of prospects than you. Remote work is a real option, however I have a skillset (.NET/Java/Python) that is much more marketable in large enterprises than the kind of companies - startups and SMEs - that are more remote-friendly. I have a working knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript but never worked with it sever-side (Node), so I can't sell myself as full-stack developer.

My saving grace is my network: I have a few friends back in the UK who are helping me finding remote work. Can't complain, but it's a constant struggle to be able to work from here at salaries comparable to US or UK ($100K+), and, as I said, a race to the bottom.
