As a Korean American you could probably obtain an F visa which would legally allow you to do almost any job that a Korean citizen does. How good is your Korean? I think that will have a lot to do with how you are treated. As for dating, a lot of Korean men are getting married to SE Asian women these days because they are unable to find Korean women who are interested in them. I'm not sure dating in Korea would be better than America.

A few members of this site have taught English in China. They could probably give you some good advice about living there.

I currently live in koreatown Los Angeles. My dating life is pretty non existent but I notice it's Korean fobs and Chinese fob and Chinese American cut me the most slack. The only thing about Korean fobs is that I rarely find them attractive... And there personalities piss me off, to the core.

I don't know much about Korea other than the night life is very very fun. I think ill do OK with Korean women but if I have the same odds (or better) with Chinese women then id rather go for China. Plus I find them way more attractive.

Traveler are you living in Korea? Or where are you currently living?
Yes, I live in Korea. You might do okay. I think it's mostly poor Korean farmers who marry mail order brides. English teachers don't do so badly here though it's nothing like the Philippines.

A teacher I worked with previously was a Korean American on an F visa. There is the TaLK program which will place you in a rural area if you don't have a degree. Housing is usually provided too. I knew an African American who was in the program. He made quite bit of money from a second (illegal) teaching job.

Other than that, you could try coming to Korea as a student and maybe do some tutoring on the side to make ends meet. Some people have made it work.

Hi Chrissays. I'm a Korean American living and teaching English in China.

Go to China to find a women because most Chinese women like Korean men. You and any other Korean American men would do really well here! Also, as Traveller mentioned before, SE Asian women have a thing for Korean American men, so maybe you should try your luck in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia or the Philippines?

You could try going to Korea as well and finding a women there, but Korean women are becoming increasingly vain and pompous; I think there are better options besides them (some of whom I previously mentioned), to be honest. But that shouldn't stop you from trying as there are many Korean American men who find their wives back home. It's not impossible to find a good Korean girl right now--but as time goes on...Korean women are slowly starting to become like American women. Maybe in a decade or so, Korean women will be indistinguishable from American women.

I really like the vibe of South Korea, though. For a Korean American, I enjoy going back to the country once-in-a-while, just to experience the country again. I suggest you come to Asia as the USA is quickly turning into a hell-hole of gigantic proportions, and it will only be a matter-of-time before the day of reckoning hits the country very soon. ...

That's the understatement of the year.

I'm not Korean. I've lived in S. Korea and Indonesia. I don't see why you wouldn't be treated well in S. Korea. I taught English in Korea. Foreigners with a degree could easily get a job teaching English when I was there. Salaries were around $1800 a month plus a room in an apartment the last I checked. I think bi-lingual Koreans would be well-received on the job market.

I get the impression that Koreans as foreigners from a developed country would be 'high status' in Korea. A Korean man in my old neighborhood seemed to have a lot of luck with the ladies. He was married and living with his wife. But apparently he was sleeping with his secretary and another young female employee. I think he had some money.

I suppose a Korean could experience some anti-Chinese prejudice in Indonesia, but I get the impression that it's not a big issue on a day-to-day basis. Maybe just a little extra mark-up in the bazaar, but all expats get that anyway for prices you have to haggle over. It might be a problem every 10 years or so when there is some kind of riot against the Chinese, but lots of foreigners live in places with a bit of security against that sort of thing.

Chrissays wrote: For some reason, I get the impression finding a job in South Korea would be very difficult (I don't have a degree).
You could look into whether you can just get a visa to work based on being Korean or if your parents have citizenship. Private English lessons used to be very lucrative in Korea. I wouldn't be surprised if they still are, and you could probably find some English school that would take you without a degree for some guaranteed money until you get the lessons going on the side.

Otherwise, for a permanent, move, if you go to China, you'll probably need some special skill that other people there don't have. If you can cook or work in a factory, so can half a billion other people willing to do it for pennies an hour. If you have a really technical skill otherwise, then you may be okay. If not that, then having a foreign degree from a developed country can put you in a higher pay range. Maybe you can go over there, live on third world wages, and never go back to the west. If that will make you happy, go for it.
There either super conservative or super picky.. And there not even THAT attractive IMO. There probably the "hardest" women on the planet.. Seriously.
For me personally, super conservative might not bother me, but if it's super conservative in some Confucian-based culture I don't understand, that could be very difficult. Super conservative may mean she's a virgin until she gets married, but she doesn't sleep around afterwards and that you are supposed to be the boss.

I've seen some K dramas, and a lot of the households have a dominant mother and a cowering father. I have seen the snobby wife with a strong husband who knew how to put his foot down and she submitted to him, in spite of all her character flaws (sneaking behind his back at times, though.) You probably know more about the inner workings of Korea.

In Korea, I had an American friend who had just gotten married, and I guess he just wanted to share his good news with someone, so he would tell me stuff about his wife, like her telling him if he ever wanted her in the middle of the night to wake her up, how she liked him to chase her around the apartment naked before having sex. It sounded like they had sex constantly. But my guess is that's just an individual thing, and not typical of all Korean women.

I didn't date long enough with anyone in Korea to really know what Korean woman are like. So I don't know about the difficult thing. I don't agree with you about them not being attractive. Sure, most women aren't super-attractive. I found lots of 8's in Korea all over the place. Occasionally, out of the million women per square mile, there would be a 9+ for my own appreciation of looks. But it's like that in a lot of places. It does seem like China has a lot of attractive young women, though. But it's all a mater of taste. Korea is probably not the place for men who like super curvy women, but China probably isn't either.
My first choice would be China as I believe there would be more opportunity to find work (without a degree) and getting a Chinese woman would be more attainable (I could always practice the language and I find them the most attractive, plus the sheer numbers). They have that feminine strength, not like Korean women who are so emotionally flimsy and mentally cave in at anything. -_-
Don't Chinese women also have a reputation for ruling the roost and giving their husbands an earful? I think they have a reputation for the latter in Indonesia, or so I've heard. They don't sound that different from Koreans in that regard. But China has lots of small subcultures and ethnic groups, and Korea seems kind of culturally homogeneous. I've never been to China except for Hong Kong, so my statement about China is academic, rather than from real life experience.
But for me it's mainly women. I'll be damned if I can get a cute Chinese (or any asian) American, educated etc in my current situation.
There is no need to damn yourself. Considering how little wages can be in some of these countries, I think it's a good idea to go there with a specific plan. In the US, illegal workers get stuck making less than minimum wage just to be able to work. You wouldn't want to get stuck making less than minimum wage in a country where an entry level management position pays less than a high school student makes working at McDonald's part-time in this country.

Hey Mrman,

Not sure about Korean dramas because I don't really watch them, it's always some Grandma screaming and crying over, probably stupid sh*t. Or some boy and girl who fall in love but she dies of cancer.. I hate Korean dramas.

As far as the household I grew up in, my father has my mom on lock. Typical little Korean girl (or girly girl of any ethnicity) who had her eyes on the "alpha". Even amongst Americans (of all creeds) he's pretty respected, all from his self confidence. The neighbors hurry inside their homes when he pulls alongside the driveway.

But it was my mother who raised me (I don't have to spell out her character traits), and that's why I'm having so many problems in life. If I took after my father (who walked out on me during crucial stages of my life) women would not be a problem. Only time and money.

I guess I'm bitter at Korean women because I see so many of the pretty girly fobs who are just like my mother, only 30 years younger. And there's not too many Korean males like my father.. Very few. I really got f***ed over on my upbringing.

Anyways, I'm sure there are ways to get a teaching job in China without a degree. I always hear stories but the details are never "explained". I'm hoping to find those answer and more on this forum.

Go to Dave's ESL café and check out the China forum if you want to find out about English teaching jobs in China. There are subforums for other countries, too. The job boards post lots of jobs.

Chrissays,

You have to double check if you can get an f-visa. For me I was born in Korea but immigrated to America when I was a baby. Because of that I have dual citizenship with South Korea. And as you know in South Korea it still is a requirement for Korea males to join the military. To get the f-visa you have to get your name out of the books in Korea. It's sounds complicated but it's not really.

I don't know if you have a degree or not but a college degree plus having a TESOL is what you need to get an ESL job in Korea. Typically in South Korea they prefer white people as ESL teaching thinking that only white people speak English. But because South KOrea has this English obsession it's not too hard to find work in Korea as an ESL teacher.

Social life..it depends on you. About 10 years ago being a kyopo gave you some advantage and I think this also applies to white expats but nowadays the novelty wore off so having personality or being interesting matters more than just being a kyopo. If you decide to hang out with other expats it's a mix bag. When I was in Korea I met the worst of the worst expats. It's like for what ever reason expats that go to Asia tend to be the less desirable in personality.

Datng..Korean women became allot pickier as South Korea develop. On top of that South Korea I hate to say is superficial regarding looks and status. It doesn't mean you can't date or find love there but just be aware of that. For me personal I did allot better in South Korea than in America. I'm married to a Korean girl from Korea to give you an idea. Many of kyopo guya I knew did well in Korea to give you an idea but it's not super easy or anything but easier than in America.

Other countries to consider would be China and other parts of South East Asia. I would also consider South America. If I was single again I would try to investigate South America. I hear that Asian men over there to OK and I think if you can't speak Korean picking up Spanish would be allot easier.

At the same time what you bring to the table is important. Don't think "hey I'm from America ..and people should worship me attitude"...I mean be decent person and not a dick like other soooo many other expats I met in my travels.

Id like to visit Korea for fun and traveling. For casual dating, id like to visit China, PI Vietnam and a few other countries. I wouldn't try that in Korea because Korean women and culture is probably the most conservative on the planet. Maybe to look for a wife? And even then, I probably could find higher quality in a SE country or China. Korean girls are super picky.. Maybe I'll go there for plastic surgery LOL

What you think is being conservative is actually just greed and xenophobia. Foreigners don't look like a good meal ticket anymore...girls don't want to get a rep as a dirty slut who dates foreigners...if she does then she can't land a quality Korean "man".
Most Korean women are whores. You think Korea girls who go abroad for ESL or study are actually studying? If they are attractive they are a prostitute...thousands and thousands of them. Same with good looking Chinese and Japanese girls.

Like Devil Dog they want to do something and earn some money. Must be real men.

Luc Furr,

Over generalization. It's like saying all black men in America plays Basket ball or that all white guys that go over seas are sex tourist. I live in NYC and I met a number of ESL students and international students and many of them are from South Korea. Many of the Korean girls I met were decent some were sluts and some were plain nuts.

When it comes to being conservative for Korean girls...its more in the line that they tend to play suzy homemaker role.. I don't think a liberal white woman would do that .
