Indeed. Long story short, there is no government unemployment insurance in NZ, so to make up for that you can get basic welfare if you don’t have much income, even if you have assets. Supplemental welfare such as money towards rent, medicine and such are asset tested, so people like me are ineligible for it. Yes, I did declare my assets and therefore collected only legally entitled gibs, in case you were thinking of snitching on me to the NZ authorities.
