Should we move to England? Are these good reasons?

Post by Winston »

Hi all,
Lately I've been thinking that maybe my most logical goal would be to live in the UK, for the following reasons. Let me know what you think.

- You can make good money there, like in the US. The pound is worth more than the dollar even.
- It is in Europe, the area of the world I like most, culturally speaking. Europe seems to have the maximum pros with the least cons - modern conveniences, rich interesting cultures, open inclusive people, friendly girls, intellectualism, good wholesome food, etc. It fits my personality the best.
- Being an English speaking country, it would be one of the few places in Europe where I wouldn't have to deal with a language barrier. Thus the UK would be a good home base.
- The culture and media in the UK seem to cover topics that are of a more intellectual nature. Less trashy culture and dumbed down people, in other words. I notice this from reading British newspapers even. So it seems to be more intellectual and sophisticated than the US, and the people seem so too.
- Though some say that the British are just as closed and cliquish as Americans if not more so, I don't find that to be the case. In my experience, they seem far easier and more natural to chat up, and more pleasant and civil at socializing. And besides, British people do not usually agree with the assessment that they are no different than Americans. They see themselves as far more civilized, refined and educated.
- From what I've heard, there is a lot less racism in the UK toward Asians than there is in the US. As a result, Blacks and Asians, I hear, do not have the inferiority complex in the UK that they do in the US, but seem a lot more well adjusted. Also, some UK women find Asian men to be exotic, rather than nerdy, and are intrigued by "the East".
- Since I was a child, I always felt a sense of nostalgia for England and felt like I had a past life there, so I've always been meaning to check it out to see if it triggers anything within me.

So, when I add it all up, the UK seems to have the same material benefits as the US, without the racism, and some of the qualities that I like in Europe. Thus it seems like a logical choice.

What do you think? Does the UK really have some of the benefits of the US without the negatives?

Also, since school is probably free there, like in the US, maybe it would be a good idea to raise my son there, so he can be well educated in a quality school environment?

Read the Daily Mail

Post by Mr S »

Read the Daily Mail for a few weeks everyday and then see if you want to still live there. It's like Big Brother meets Brave New World. Your always talking about conspiracy shit, well that's one of the countries manipulating things and attempting to bring upon a New World Order...

I would never live there, it's a nanny state with super high taxes and drunk hooligans running around. If you try to defend yourself there and hurt the person while protecting yourself or property you end up going to jail. It's retarded over there. Your better off going to Ireland if you want to be around a similar culture and the English language.

But I think you would need a working visa to live and work in either the UK or Ireland. Americans can't just go there and work unless you have an Eu passport.

I've always liked "British things" here are some examples. I have a fondness for the the Victorian era and the culture during that time. I love old homes built during the victorian era for example. I also love British made movies, especially the "Hammer films" made during the 50's, 60' and early 70's. I love British comedian Benny Hill, I also love British actors Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. I also love the James Bond films. Maybe in a past life I was living in England, who knows.

However, from what I read on the internet, the UK is more crazy than the US when it comes to feminist laws. It seems like the UK sees men as the enemy. Also, "big brother" seems to be everywhere in England or at least in London. They have cameras all over the place watching people, so there is little privacy. Guys who live in the UK say the women there are even MORE snobby than American women! Now that's coming from guys who live in the UK and have visited the US.

I am not sure if the UK is the place to live. It might be a nice place to visit but I don't know if I would want to live there!

Scandinavia?

Post by adam917 »

What about one of the Scandinavian countries? English is widely spoken in those places and even learning those languages should've be very hard given they come from the same language family as English (Germanic?).

If you're worried about the EU getting bigger than maybe you could choose to go to Norway. I know someone who moved to Norway around 2004 from Leicester, UK and she said life was a lot nicer up there than back home. I don't know exactly why she moved (likely a lot of factors but does anyone know anything about Leicester and she she considers it a shithole?) but she is a very intelligent person and owned one of the 1st radio stations on-line for nearly a decade.

Your friend in Taichung used to live in UK for school, might want to ask her for some pointers.

Housing in cities like London is very expensive and rent is calculated weekly in many cases.

My old company had an office on Grosvenor Place, right across the street from Buckingham Palace. :D

To be honest Winston you'd probably hate the U.K. I've met a lot of Brits abroad and most of the ones I met left for a reason. There's a LOT of brits who leave the motherland in their late 20's-30's to go work abroad permanently. The complaints I hear make the U.K. sound worse than the U.S. because housing is expensive, jobs can be scarce, weather sucks, and people are socially distant. The brits you talk to might just be the happier ones who act differently from the ones at home.

About the weather 'sucking', I guess that depends on what a person prefers. I for one am unusual in that I can't stand weather above about 28 °C but don't mind when it drops below 0. About housing being expensive, it's like that in every 1st-world country that is in in-demand areas.

Thanks for the advice about England. Most likely it is cold and anti-social there, especially London I heard. The thing is, I just didn't sense the same "bitch shield" around British girls that I do with American girls. And the egos of Englishmen seem far more mellow and reserved. When I got aggressive with one during a debate in Taiwan, cause he was using shit politically correct logic rather than common sense and reality, he quickly backed down like he was scared and owned. An American wouldn't have backed down the way he did.

But in any case, Europe seems to have the best of all worlds - friendly women, inclusive social groups, rich culture and architecture, history, high quality food and clean streets, intellectuals, girls with down to earth personalities, etc. So it seems ideal. I'd still like to do a tour through there again. At the very least you could teach English. I heard that smaller towns are desperate to hire foreigners to teach English. Someone in Olsztyn, Poland offered me work one time, but with all the skinheads there and swastikas on public streets, I didn't think so... even if I were trying to reside in Poland.

Everyone's experience is different and sometimes it depends on who you run into. Not everyone here said they liked Krakow, but I had some great friends there that I had a camaraderie with, so that made the difference. But all Poles say that Krakow is the funnest town in their country.

Apparently there are a lot of expat families that like the UK better than the US. There are some benefits there over the US. Some say that strangers are more friendly and open too. See below. How can that be? Why do you guys lump the US and UK together? I'm sure more Brits would not agree that Britain and the US are the same. I've never bought that. Is it because the UK is better for families but not single males?

Apparently the police in the UK are nicer and more civilized too.

There are some benefits of living in the UK over the US - but that doesn't mean it is any good in other aspects. The US and the UK aren't the same culturally but one is not better than the other. The good thing about the UK is the National Health Service and that educational opportunities are available to everyone if they want it - recently they have started heavily charging students going to university but if you want to learn a trade or go back to school and retake GCSE's/A-levels or learn a foreign language - still cheap and if you are unemployed - it's FREE!

I think the women are stuck up and not very attractive in the main and they never liked me but they weren't my type so maybe I was projecting onto them. When I was at university, I met plenty of nice, smiley, attractive American girls from the University of Iowa.

The weather is uniformly crap all over the UK - there are years where the 'summer' you won't see any sun which is why many Brits are to be found in Thailand, Florida, Spain, Greece, Turkey etc - also, for socialising, you need a car and it is getting like America where all the good stores are to be found on retail centres out of town, also public transport is getting more and more expensive and therefore - you really need a car - eating out? Expensive - you couldn't do it more than once a week even with a good job, here in China, I can eat out every day if I wanted to - I don't think 'Friday or Saturday for a beer' and then choose one day or another - I can go out Friday and a Saturday for a beer and a meal in China, public transport is fantastic and cheap - very cheap - in China a bus ride is 20 cents, in the UK it is nearly 5 dollars.

Also, the UK has a violent culture - a lot of people I know - especially as young males - have been attacked and beaten up on a night out - something that rarely would happen in China. Beaten up for no reason at all - well, usually because some guy has his friends and picks on someone on their own. People are getting beaten up and there is at least one death through reckless violence every weekend in the UK. Some of it is down to the massive drug problem that is at epidemic levels in the UK (and is basically out of control) but a lot of it is down to the fact that historically, the UK is a violent culture.

To sum it up - if you have money - you can live in a nice part of the UK and have a nice life, but it will cost you, if you don't have money then you will live in a shithole with violent, anti-social people...

Happening because people can't be arsed taking their shit to the tip or properly getting rid of their rubbish.

Happen to live here? Well, the chances of you getting stabbed to death go up dramatically. If you want to come to the UK and have a nice life with nice people - BRING LOTS OF MONEY.

I cannot think about any reason why somebody should move over to UK.

Well, it depends from where you are. If you are from a poverty place somewhere in Asia or Africa, you will try to enter - often even illegally. Why not?

However if you are like myself living in Japan and are holding EU (Austria) citizenship, I see really no incentive why I should be interested in moving to UK.

Exactly, and those people from Asia and Africa move within established communities there anyway.

There are lot of EU migrants in the UK but they usually are a) very well qualified and b) living in London or one of the bigger cities - mostly London though, they have money, a job, legal status etc. I don't see how anyone without a substansial sum of money OR a good job that will pay a great salary is going to have a nice life over there when everything is very expensive, the weather crap and there isn't an outdoor culture of any kind - most socialising revolves around the pub and alcohol.

The UK might attract Indian people or highly qualified EU migrants on a good package but for a EU migrant living in a crappier part of the country - racism and violence happens!

Presumably this is a joke thread. Obviously England is a horrible dismal shithole with no redeeming features, unless maybe you like looking at old castles and such.

But yick and yohan, how do u explain the three videos above from americans who like the UK and have a more interesting life there? They dont seem to be there for the girls. But arent the people in UK more authentic and approachable and more willing to talk to strangers? Don't they love to invite you in for a cup of tea like the movies always show? Lol. Also the british accents sound more cultured and historical.
