Activation link not reaching new members

To any new members here:

Were you able to receive the activation link by email ok? I tested it earlier with test registrations and found that the activation link doesn't get sent to the new registrant's email box. I don't know why. Yet some of you recently registered nevertheless. Really odd.

In any case, I've set the forum so that new registrants no longer have to click on an email activation link, as long as they fill out the registration form correctly.

Mr S tells me that he has not been receiving alerts and notifications from this forum lately, as he usually does, when someone replies to his topics. He selected to receive notifications. Are any of you having the same problem?

If so, I don't know what's wrong. All I can find in phpBB support about this is that I should change the email settings in the admin panel here to SMTP, but I have no idea how to fill out the fields for SMTP.

Momopi? Any idea?

Here is what the fields for SMTP Mail say in the configuration panel of this forum.

Code: Select all

Use SMTP Server for email
Say yes if you want or have to send email via a named server instead of the local mail function Yes No
SMTP Server Address
SMTP Username
Only enter a username if your SMTP server requires it
SMTP Password
Only enter a password if your SMTP server requires it
Any idea how to fill that out?

That's a question for your ISP, if you choose to use your service provider's server. If not, Google for other SMTP services and try them out.

Standard SMTP server name is smtp.server.com, i.e. smtp.gmx.com. Your user name is your e-mail address at the server. Same with password.

Well I contacted Godaddy and they gave me a relay server to enter into that field. After I did so, I created a test registration account and the system did send the activation link. So I guess it's working now.

However, I don't see the point in making new users have to click an activation link in their email. It makes the process more tedious and plus some new users email me saying that they never received the activation link. So isn't it better to cut out the risk? Also, since spam bots have no problem clicking activation links, I don't see what protection this would offer either. So I'm probably gonna just let the system activate accounts immediately after registration without having to click an email activation link.

About every third or fourth time I come here, I am no longer automatically logged in, which means I can't check the posts made since my previous log-in as the "view posts since last visit" is empty when that happens. Don't know if it happens to anyone else, maybe a generic "new posts" link can be added?
