As a fluent Russian speaker I also have a favorite Russian singer.
He was extremely popular among the Russian baby boom generation during their youth in 1960s and 1970s.
His songs often had a philosophical and social subtext, his lyrics made people think, analyze, and reflect.
Of course, the Soviet authorities tried their best to limit his songs, because they often revealed deep hidden truth.

While Russian boomers were obsessively in love with his songs, the current generation of Russian Millennials think that his songs are lame, cheesy, overtly emotional, and overly melodramatic. They believe that only losers and omegas can listen to this singer. He is really quickly becoming forgotten in his own country, even though he was once the Russian Dylan, if not the Russian Beatles. USA pays much greater respect its boomer music legends, but not Russia. It's too bad but Russian MIllennials are brainwashed by their current propaganda. Russian Millennials seem to have this hive mentality that any deviation from acting like a thug means that you are a loser. To many of them, anything that has warmth, tenderness, and soul is viewed as weakness.
