This episode of Banged up Abroad also called "Kidnapped Abroad" in the USA (and Jailed Abroad for other episodes), fits in right with what Happier Abroad deals with.

This was an American guy, straight shooter, no drug problem, etc. typical worker bee who slaved away for years and ends up a broken man with nothing to show for it. The chickens came home to roost. There is no safety net in American society, and he was unfortunate enough to marry an American women. He eventually decided to go to the Philippines to find himself again and ended up kidnapped. Check it out, and it's in decent video quality so watch in fullscreen.

Notice at least part of that re-enactment was filmed in Taiwan.

But this other episode about being jailed in Indonesia was filmed in the Philippines.

You never know who you really are until you find yourself in similar circumstances.

Isn't this film another scare propaganda to make people think that going abroad is dangerous? If so, why are you spreading it?

I don't doubt that's one of the reasons it appears on American tv, but the people on here are smart enough not to fall for it. Please check it out before laying judgement. It is not a show that spreads negativity, at least I don't perceive it that way. In fact it's one of the few positive and more importantly human, programs you will see nowadays.

With a professional background and long experience in this area, I am quite familiar with this account.
This man is a total charlatan, and his tale is total bullshit. NONE of the key elements in his
story have any witnesses, and it he came up with the tale AFTER the well documented Burnham kidnapping,
and he profiteers off of this wild tale among the naive . I know of NO ONE in the intell/security world
who believes his tale.

And you are correct, It is fabricated bullshit for personal gain, that tends to scare the crap out of
people contemplating travel to the Philippines. This jackass has been on the circuit with this
for several years making money off it. National Geographic stupidly made a drama
about this, without being able to verify anything of substance. What stooges.

That's nothing new. Only in America will you find criminals making millions on book sales upon their release.That German guy who escaped a prisoner of war work camp after WWII, and walked across Siberia in the span of 3 years all the way to Iran had his story plagiarized for profit. Then that "Midnight Express" guy who escaped from a Turkish prison in the 70s had his story exploited. Virtually everything on tv is fake. Notoriously those BBC documentaries where they follow people with a disorder around. Only they're actors. But they don't tell you this. I'm surprised this episode had that bit of truth about the loyalty of American women. I guess it's targeted at a guys in similar circumstances, sitting at home, thinking about changing their surroundings to "to get better". They might be discouraged by something like this. I still like watching the show because it shows you what's really important and makes you appreciate the things we take for granted. The other episodes feature stories more verifiable. But there are always two sides to every story.

No justice in the world These guys aren't too tooooo bad. Charlatans maybe but not exactly evil yaknow.

I always had a problem with serial killers/criminals making money off of books written during or after their sentences, about their crimes. There should be a law against that.

There IS a law on the books that prevents this kind of behaviour. I forget what it is called, though...
