How did Charles Bronson get away with slapping women around?

Holy cow. I saw a Charles Bronson movie from the 1970's called "White Buffalo" and also a western called "Once Upon A Time in America" from the late 1960's. I've noticed that in many of his films, he treated women like dirt. He slapped them around and made sure they knew he was the boss. He even kicked them around and said rude crass things to them.
Holy cow. How did he get away with that? Was that normal and admired back in the 1970's? You'll NEVER see any men do that with women today, not even in the movies. lol. Have any of you seen his films? I can't believe that men could behave like that once. Was he allowed to do that in his films in the 1990's?
Here is a film where he handled women roughly, talked down to them and whipped into shape. Can you imagine men doing that today? lol
White Buffalo (1977)
