On October 2, 1988, in the small town of Middlesex, Virginia, troubled teenager Donald J. "Donnie" Darko, led by a mysterious voice, sleepwalks out of his home. Once outside, he meets a figure in a monstrous rabbit costume who introduces himself as Frank and tells Donnie that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds. Donnie wakes up the next morning on a local golf course and returns home to discover a jet engine has crashed into his bedroom. His older sister Elizabeth tells him the FAA investigators do not know its origin.

I think its interesting that it was first released at Sundance in January 2001 and then in September 2001, we all know what happened with planes falling from skies and engines being recovered.

What's also interesting is that it sort of highlights how everyone is medicated, the quote "Burn it down" which is in the movie which Donnie is told to burn down the home of the "self-help speaker" is being widely used now by the BLM protesters, and it's also interesting how we can see different elements that exist now:

1. Teachers refusing to talk about god or religion in relation with science, even as a possibility
2. How certain women (like that conservative gym teacher) being the favorite of the Principal
3. The statue of The Mongrel (mascot of the school) got the axe
4. Donnie took the same axe before to the water pipe in the school. America's infrastructure, including water pipelines to deliver water to homes are deteriorating and sometimes bust from not being replaced in several decades or more than a century.
5. He is being medicated but maybe he doesn't need it. Most Americans now are heavily medicated.
6. The self-help guru really isn't saying or helping anyone, much like most of today's self-help guru's. They are all simple and say things that should be common sense, but in a society like America no amount of self-help, PUA, or other type of program will help a person succeed, have a better life, or find happiness.
7. 28 days until death is interesting. There were movies 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later about a pandemic (rage virus) in the UK, with at the end of the 2nd movie it spread to the continental European mainland. A 3rd movie was never made because of some sort of disagreement or funding issue. 19 years after the movie a pandemic begins with Europe for a short period being the epicenter. 2+8=10 and 1+9=10, and if you

The girl that Donnie goes out with talks about how she had a violent step-dad. This is sort of common and true because many American women and other women in the West go for bad guys and violent guys, and that ends badly, assuming they still go for guys or stay with a guy anymore. She also dies because the two larger bullies throw him and her onto the road, and gets ran over by guys driving wildly on the road.

Everyone coming back to life who died, but Donnie choosing to die after coming back was interesting. He could have tried to change time because he remembered but I guess he didn't want to live in the world anymore and probably thought he had experienced everything he wanted by being with the girl he liked and maybe tired of almost everything else. I guess it's no surprise because the suicide rate keeps increasing in the United States and if a guy can have a decently attractive girlfriend like he had then I guess they would be happy.

Dying alone is now common because most people have no one, especially as they age and then at the end. And all the materialism, consumerism, individualism, and other elements make social relationships, family, friendships, and others lesser so people will be alone and isolated in America.
