Interesting TED Talk about what horror films reveal about ourselves. Makes a lot of sense.

Btw, the speaker says the scariest film he's ever seen is not Exorcist or Amityville Horror, but a lesser known one called Salem's Lot. @jamesbond have you seen it? Here's the trailer.

Salem's Lot (1979)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079844/?ref_=vp_back

There's also a sequel to Salem's Lot too.

A Return to Salem's Lot (1987)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093855/?ref_=vp_back

Salem's Lot (2004)
And a Stephen King remake of it in 2004 as well.

This comment on YouTube makes sense about why when you feel sad or depressed, it's better to watch a horror movie than a comedy one like some people I know would recommend. I do that too, but I thought I was the only one. I didn't know others felt the same way and did the same too. Wow.

Does anyone else watch horror movies when they are stressed or sad? Watching comedies or something makes me feel worse. But, I feel so much better after watching horror. 😕

Yeah me too! Something about shared misery is really therapeutic for me. That or I can put my problems into perspective because at least I'm not being chased through the woods by a murderer

So at least for me, I have very bad anxiety, and I love horror movies. Always confused me a lot. It's my favorite genre next to Action and I came upon some research that said anxiety is a very physical thing (the effects it has on your body) and the best way to characterize anxiety is like going through a fight or flight response. When we watch scary movies it gives us something to be completely focussed on because again when we're scared it is truly only fight or flight. We are only in that moment in time and it's the only choice we have. When your body puts an enormous amount of fight or flight response while watching a good horror movie we get all that amped up adrenaline from the anxiety out of our system and the anxiety has found an outlet which is why working out is such a great thing for anxiety because it's almost like a dose of preworkout. I know you didn't ask for that explanation but I just found that out recently and it explains a lot about my tendencies. Thanks for reading. :)

Absolutely. Horror either helps strengthen me (watching the last 1 or 2 people fight to survive) or puts things into perspective that whatever I'm dealing with could be much worse (e.g. I've never had to fight a murderer, at least we're not living in a world where reanimated corpses rip you apart and eat you alive, etc.).

I thought I was the only one! When I'm depressed I only feel sadness or anger. I'm not able to feel happiness and being scared helps me to stop that sadness and anger for a while.

Omg yes! I follow a few scary, for want of a better word, channels on youtube and I often put them on to quiet my mind and switch off from everything, especially at the end of the day. My partner doesn't share this interest and doesn't understand how i find it comforting. One of my favourite channels on here is Beyond Creepy and recently when I was bereaved and struggling with insomnia for a few months listening to this channel was the only thing that helped me to sleep. Who knows why we are the way we are lol I've often tried to fathom it. I'm reasonably normal and if you passed me on the street I doubt I'd stand out but I've never been able to make anyone understand my love of horror... strictly as a film genre :)
Edit: I should clarify that the channel Beyond Creepy is more focused on mysteries and real life accounts from people around the world. He does all his own research and writes his own scripts and remains dedicated to detail as well as being open minded. I like all things horror, mysterious and creepy :)

@Sarai Wentland Wow thank you for sharing that! I've struggled to understand the physical affects of anxiety and other people seem to not understand at all the awful affects it has on the body. Is that right about working out?

Yes! I have anxiety (have had it for as long as I remember) and I love horror films and books. I started reading Stephen King at age 10 when I ran out of Point Horror, I paint horror movie monsters and have an alien and Pennywise on my wall.

I love being scared. I think it’s because that’s what I’m used to. Things in my childhood have left me permanently on edge, and to be actually scared for a reason rather than my own mind working against, is a relief, if that makes sense? I’m comfortable being scared and on edge, it’s my natural state of being.

I love horror and suspense movies, stories, books, etc. I don’t get scared anymore. However, I want to be scared. I want to feel what it’s like to have genuine fear and all the other emotions in between, leading up to fear. It’s like I can only feel extremes or absolute nothingness. Watching horror, I feel like those other emotions I feel are real instead of fake like in real life.

This horror movie "A Dark Song" about magic spells and revenge is highly recommended by magick practioners, such as this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9lQdJL1cxw

A Dark Song (2016)

Download link:
https://yts.mx/movies/a-dark-song-2016

Synopsis
Sophia Howard rents a house in the countryside of Wales and hires the occultist Joseph Solomon to contact her son that was kidnapped and murdered by teenagers practicing black magic. Along the days, Sophia follows the guidance of Solomon in rituals to purify her soul. However Sophia has a hidden agenda that jeopardizes their lives.

Brilliant work, would buy this and watch it until the disc breaks.
This movie blew me away. The photography and imagery are stunning, the acting and direction are excellent. After a decade of jump scares, creepy dead kids, cgi face warps and references to Satan, this movie goes back to grass roots and reminds us how horror stories should be told to the audience.

Subtle and powerful
It makes such a change to get a supernatural movie that makes the viewer use their imagination, rather than bombarding them with CGI and men in rubber suits. This is a study of the old chestnut, 'Be careful what you wish for'. A young mother whose son had been murdered, seeks revenge on his killers via a magic ritual invoking angels. It's clearly influenced by the "Bornless Ritual", an invocation used by Aleister Crowley to summon his Holy Guardian Angel and the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage which Crowley attempted at Boleskin House on the shores of Loch Ness. The ritual allegedly requires at least 6 months of preparation, celibacy and abstinence from alcohol. However, it also includes the summoning of the 12 Kings and Dukes of Hell, to bind them and remove their negative influences from the magician's life. Crowley was in the process of performing the lengthy ritual, when he was called to Paris by the leader of the Golden Dawn. According legend,he never banished the demons he had summoned, leading to strange happenings occurring in and around Boleskine House. But I digress.

There have been reviews that bang on about how slow this movie is, and it's lack of pace and excitement. But if you have any understanding of the supernatural, and this movie has been meticulously researched, you'd realise that the real horror lies in fear and what happens in your head. This woman, who so craves revenge, is on her own personal spiritual journey. She realises, at the 11th hour, that revenge and hatred offer nothing but pain and emptiness, and that forgiveness, both for her son's killers and herself, is what she really needs to find any peace.

I liked the dynamic between the woman and occultist, the loathing and disrespect, the sharing and mutual need. There's one really funny moment where they both share their recurring dreams.

The film is subtle in its suspense and horror, with a nice slow build and some really creepy effects. The ending seems a bit clichéd, but was saved from being corny by illustrating the power of forgiveness over revenge, and good over evil. On the whole, one of the better horror/supernatural movies of 2017 so far. I loved it.

what a wonderful masterpiece
Two years without seeing a horror movie or suspense, and it was absolutely worth seeing him. An exceptional and out-of-the-ordinary delivery. The absolutely unexpected end. What a work of art. The quality of recording is very well done, and that sound when the entity that passes through the child achieves a rather disturbing effect when observing it. It is somewhat slow, but the slow is to enjoy it, find the taste in movies like this is the task of a good fan of the cinema

"Some good horror films" became "Some campy horror films". I like horror a lot but if a film can't manage at least a score of 6 on imdb it is very unlikely to be worth my time, what with all else that's out there.

Just saw "The Pale Door". It was pretty rad and good. The story was awesome and funny. Outlaw cowboys vs witches that are 200 years old. Lol. I know it sounds campy and it is. Its cliched too. But its fun and has a spooky backstory. Loved it. You guys should check it out. Heres the trailer.

The Pale Door (2020)

After a train robbery goes bad, two brothers leading a gang of cowboys must survive the night in a ghost town inhabited by a coven of witches.

The girl who leads the outlaws into the the trap of the witches is very hot too. See her pics below. Her face is out of this world.

Some hot pics of Natasha Bassett, the girl in the horror movie "The Pale Door" that I mentioned above. @jamesbond what do you think? Doesn't she look perfect? Wouldn't you want to stay with a coven of witches if one of them looks like her? lol

There are lots of black and white Dracula movies. You gotta be more specific. Do you remember any other details? Look up www.imdb.com and search for Dracula and look for the ones before 1970. It may be one of those.

The original Dracula came out in 1931 and was in black and white.
