Getting women's phone numbers in the USA

I have seen lot's of videos from pickup artists like "Mystery," David Deangelo, Ross Jefferies and others who say "just get the courage to approach lot's of women" and "meeting women is numbers game." They maybe right about that stuff but how about overcoming rejection? How many blows to a guys self esteem can he take? I especially love these pickup artists who tell guys to ask out women in bookstores, grocery stores and in shopping malls. Good luck with that! 
Even if you do get some women's phone numbers, how many of them will you actually go on a date with? I have heard some pickup artists say, 50% of the women who's phone numbers you get, you should go out on a date with. Others, like David Deangelo say, for every 10 womens phone numbers you get, you will get a date with one or two of those women. That sounds more like it (a 10 to 20% conversion rate).
I know Winston said his conversion rate was near zero! He got some phone numbers but very few dates out of them. I wonder why a woman would give her phone number to a guy and then not want to at least talk to him over the phone (most times, she never answers the phone, you leave a message and she never calls you back).
Any of you guys running into the same problems? How about your conversion rates (how many phone numbers lead to dates?) Any of you had luck in bars and clubs?
