Most electronic failures are traceable to manufacturing defects. For example, the flurry of electrolytic failures that most learned of occurred even years after electronics were working properly. Many other failures that repairman often do not understand get blamed on heat or surges. Conclusions based mostly in speculation when the repairman does not really know. The most common failures are traceable to manufacturing defects.

Too often, others will blame mythical reasons such as heat. Heat is a diagnostic tool. Heat is one way to identify manufacturing defects before those defects result in total failure. Too many instead want to cure symptoms - ie more fans - rather than address a manufacturing defect.

What is a normal operating temperature for every desktop and laptop computer? 100 degrees F. Any computer that fails at that ideal temperature is defective. That manufacturing defect should be found and eliminated.

Momopi,
I have a question. If you store too many files on your hard drive, even if they are not programs that are running, does that slow down your computer's speed and performance?

Also, are there really programs out there that speed up your computer? Are they worth it? Or are those exaggerations? What can those programs do that your windows maintenance utilities can't?

Thanks,
Winston

1. Yes and no. Having a lot of files itself only cause a tiny performance impact, but you'd have collateral performance impact from stuff like file fragmentation, anti-virus program (have to scan a lot more files), opening a file in Excel and having to sort through 100's in a folder, and so on..

2. There are many Windows optimization utilities that might improve performance by cleaning/tweaking your windows registry and boot.ini.

Momopi,
A few questions:

- Even after my Advanced System Care program, which you recommended, cleans out my computer in its multi-step process, my computer still slows down and hangs after a while, to the point that I have to restart it everyday to prevent that.

Could it be that my Windows Vista system files are corrupted? Don't all Windows systems corrupt eventually and have to reinstalled?

- Also, every time I do a check disk (either with Advanced System Care or when Windows starts up) I get a message that says "44 reparse records processed". No matter how many times I do the disk check, even twice in a row, that same message comes up. What does it mean? Is it a signal that my Windows is corrupted? Why can't the check disk utility fix it?

Thanks,
Winston

Detailed info:

If you have doubts about the HDD's reliability, you could reformat the HDD and reinstall Windows. Use the full format (NTFS) option and not the quick format. This will take quite some time so just go cook lunch while the formatting is in progress.

Check disk is only about how software is stored, what the filename is for that software, etc. Chkdsk does nothing to identify or fix hardware problems. To see hardware problems, go to Windows' system (event) logs. That is where Windows records hardware problems before working around them.

To have better information, execute the computer manufacturer's comprehensive hardware diagnostic or the disk drive manufacturer's diagnostic. Appreciate the difference between software errors and hardware problems.

How do I go to Windows events logs? I don't know of any hardware diagnostic. Where do you find that?

All computer manufacturers have comprehensive hardware diagnostics. But only the better computer manufacturers provide them for free on the hard drive (either you boot to Windows or you boot the hardware diagnostics), on a provide CD-Rom, and on their web site. Comprehensive hardware diagnostics are exactly for the problems you are suffering. No diagnostic in Windows is intended to solve or dientify hardware problems. Only to work around those problems.

If your computer manufacturer is too cheap, then download comprehensive disk drive diagnostics from that manufacturer or from the UBCD.com website. Go to Device Manager or Disk Manager to find manufacturer and model information.

Go to Windows Start>Help to find system (event) logs. Or find them via Control Panel under Administrative Tools.

Ok I found the Event Viewer of my system diagnostics. But it just says a bunch of stuff I can't understand. I can't tell if anything is related to hardware problems or not. And I can't find a way to download a report so that I can post it here to show you either.

When I find the installation disk, I may try reinstalling Windows again, if it won't erase my files. But then again, I don't mind restarting it everyday if I have to.

What is the brand and model # of your laptop?

(Look under the laptop for a sticker that might say "model XXX-XXX-XXXU")

It's a Packard Bell Note F0336-V 089.

Why? What does that tell you?

I got it in the Philippines though, so I think it's one of those "made for cheap Asian countries" types. A google search on it shows that.

That is the point. It says many things. You are confused because you do not know the significance of facts in plain sight.

For example, event log says things you do not understand. That means it is probably most important information. Start with the messages that discuss failures. And start with the most recent - especially those after you noticed problems. Start by summarizing those many messages so that relevant ones can be requested.

Remember, you are asking for help because you are confused. Therefore even laptop manufacturer and model number for the disk drive were important. Remember, you have a long list of still unanswered questions. Not answering them only make solutions harder and this thread unnecessarily longer. Most important are answers to questions that seem irrelevant to you. Why are they irrelevant? You are confused because you do not know why the information is important.

A worst thing to do is reload Windows. Most likely, everything in the OS is fine - based upon what you have posted. You would trash a perfectly good OS because hardware is unstable? Then create two unknowns from one. Create an unstable OS because the hardware is unstable. Two to the power of an exponent is how many times more complicated the problem becomes. Your symptoms say a hardware problem – as was posted before. Until you establish hardware integrity, then any changes to the OS can be wasted labor or even make things worse.

Event log was probably reporting your failure long ago with Xs on a red circle. Ignoring that only because you do not understand it is a formula for even more confusion and unnecessary work. You are confused. Therefore the most important facts are everything you do not understand.

Necessary was your disk drive model number; obtaining diagnostics from the manufacturer or UBCD.com because it was mentioned repeatedly and because you do not know why it is important. As stated repeatedly – nothing says your OS has a problem which is why Chkdsk even does nothing useful. Windows routinely records hardware problems, then works around those problems. Obviously, one reason why Windows is a poor tool for finding hardware failures. And why event logs (and device manager) are important.

So you have already been to the Packard Bell site for their comprehensive hardware diagnostics and downloaded them.

He has a PB EasyNote, but the model # is not listed on the support web site (both current and legacy models). PH is not even listed in the country selection. >_> I think the best we can do is just run 3rd party diagnostic utils.

=========

At my current gig we send computers to industrial manufacturing and mining sites. The customer is NOT supposed to be surfing the web or physically abusing them, but tell that to a miner wearing heavy gloves underground. I have a roll of Velcro tape that I use to repair abused power buttons on Dell PC's.

A new PC only cost a few hundred dollars, so it's cheaper for us to just swap the computer by Fed Ex. When the computer or controller unit is sent back to us, we find all kinds of interesting dirt and debris inside the case. I don't even bother booting it up anymore, it's usually infected up the wazoo with virus and spy-ware. We just pull the drive and re-image it.

Momopi,

Every time I run check disk, I keep getting the 44 reparse records processed message. I Googled this and all the sites said to leave that alone.

But when I run the Disk Doctor program on Advanced System Care that you referred me to, it keeps saying that my hard drive has errors. Then it asks me to reboot so that it can fix them. After I do that, when I run Disk Doctor again, it still says I have errors.

Why can't it fix them? Is that due to bad sectors or a degrading hard drive? What do you think?
