Windows vs. Linux - Which is better?

Post by Winston »

Some of my tech advisors are saying that it's better to use Linux cause it doesn't have all the problems that Windows does. Plus it's free too. If that's so, then why isn't everyone using Linux?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Linux?

Here's a site to download Linux from that a friend showed me. But it's a huge file though.

* Comparison between Linux and Windows
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... _and_Linux

* Comparison of Linux Distributions
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... tributions
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... iveDistros

* Good source for Linux distribution info:
http://distrowatch.com/

* Most Linux LiveCD's are single disc download, versus old days when distributions like Mandrake required you to download 3 CD's. So, in comparison, the download file size is quite small and not huge in any way.

* Most Linux apps are free and non-commercial. The developers have no financial incentive to assist you. So don't expect commercial (paid) grade support.

* Some Linux users are arrogant a-holes who look down on newbies. For example, if you ever complained that the Live CD download is "huge" they'd know you're a n00b and either ignore you or give you an attitude. They think if you're not smart enough to figure it out on your own, you should use a Mac instead.

* Many Windows users are simpletons and tend to freak out when they see Linux command line parameters like

echo "deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ gutsy free non-free" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update

* Linux command line parameters differ from DOS. Instead of DIR you use ls , and instead of TYPE you use cat . If you use only the GUI portion of Linux, you won't have to worry about it.

You're silly because Vista is drunken version of Windows 7. Windows 7 is every right about how wrong Vista was.
But my favorite OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1; I use it via VMWare Virtual Workstation.

It all depends, linux is number one for server tasks, but for average home user windows is still number 1 because it is much simpler to use.

Questions about Linux:

Is it better to use Linux than Windows? If so, why doesn't everyone just use Linux rather than Windows?

Any disadvantages to using Linux? Isn't it more clean and less resource hogging and more efficient?

Any of you using Linux?

Is Linux more user friendly now than before?

If Linux is virus free, then why can't Windows be virus free too? Why don't virus creators create viruses for Linux systems too?

Also, can you run Linux and Windows at the same time? Or have both installed so that you can use one or the other when you need them?

I guess you can have Linux and Windows on the same computer, but only one operating system can be active at a time.

The disadvantage is the switching cost of having to learn a new system. I can find stuff in Windows. When they come out with a new version of Windows that doesn't improve anything on the user interface side, as always, and you have to learn to find stuff, I think about switching. But then I remember trying to use a Linux system back when one of the departments in grad school was trying to save money and had SAS running on a Linux machine and it was so hard to find anything. The versions of it I have used did not seem to have all the bells and whistles either. There aren't that many users of Linux, either, compared to OS or Windows. I don't want to spend a lot of time learning a new system. I want to make my life easier.

I also hated having to take a class in a Mac lab. I couldn't open something to quickly take a note because I couldn't find anything.

The positive side of Linux is that it is so rarely used, it is unlikely that hackers will try to hack into it. So you get that extra degree of safety. It's hard to beat free for price.

I have used Linux to hack a password on a machine when the password was lost. Someone gave me a laptop that didn't have a password. I had an old version of a version of Linux, looked up how to hack a password on the Internet and eventually figured it out, but the computer turned out to be really slow and the wifi didn't work.

Specifically what problems does Windows have? Doesn't Microsoft fix them right away? Windows 10 came with my laptop so I suppose it's "free" or included but you can still download Windows for free and install it on any PC. You may get an Activation Required watermark on your screen if you don't pay for it.

Yes, you can download Linux (Ubuntu) for free. I find though that it doesn't have as much software available for it as Windows does. I think you can run it off a USB or hard drive so you can actually use both OSs if you want. I will stay with Windows as it's more reliable and Microsoft does a good job with their updates.

I got Linux to work on my laptop by putting it on a usb drive and booting it from there. Here is what I noticed.

I noticed that it was fast and smooth. When searching for files in its window, the search results came up instantly, not like in Windows where searching for files takes a long slow time. Why is that? Why can't Microsoft Windows bring up search results instantaneously like Linux does? Why does Bill Gates suck like that? Isn't he supposed to be a genius? If so, why can't he makes Windows fast and efficient like Linux is? Anyone know? Does Gates like to deliberately frustrate people? Isn't he a genius? Why doesn't he focus on speed and efficiency? And how could a FREE operating system be better than his multi-billion dollar corporation?

Can anyone explain? Also why doesn't everyone just switch to LInux and put Microsoft out of business? How can Microsoft compete with free and better software? Any idea?
