No Winston most of this stuff I'm seeing for the first time so it's more looking at "what could have been". This thread is from the week you made 1996 the default theme and I was telling you like Bonzi Buddy and Clippy you should have Winston Buddy greeting and advising visiting sexpats. :D That's too much work so I just made a themed thread. After you brought back the hideous modern white-background themes like Elegance to be more like Roosh it gave me the idea to look into 2000s and early 2010s web design to see where it all went wrong and to look into Bill Gates and see when he went from a computer nerd selling buggy software to a James Bond villain. Which I'm not done with and I still don't know why websites and forums become so ugly all the sudden and exactly when that happened, probably around the time Facebook took off. Looking into Billy Gate is a lot easier because he's been trending all year and people are reuploading his interviews all over the place.

Around 1993 or 1994, when I first used netscape and saw web pages, most of them had gray backgrounds. They easy on the eyes.

I really didn't get it when Windows '95 came out and chose the light bulb background as the default. Why didn't people use the features in Windows to tone down the background? MS DOS had a black background.

Then, after XP, probably around Windows 8 or so, Windows got rid of the ability to easily adjust colors to our tast, leaving us with 'high contrast' options that forced us to remove other colors if we wanted an easy switch to an easy-on-the-eyes background.

Webcrawler seemed to be the coolest search engine way back then.

Webcrawler was pretty cool back in the day!

Computing before the mid-2000s wasn't as cool as movies made it out to be. Almost nobody had the kind of setups shown in the videos or fast internet or even knew what they were doing. If I had known about the hardware or the programs listed in the videos I still wouldn't have been using them because very few were able to afford tech like that and it rarely met expectations. Companies were often selling a fantasy, gadgets and software for a future that hadn't arrived yet and only really worked in movies where performance limitations don't exist and everyone is an expert hacker and millionaire. 20 and 25 years ago salaries were much lower but some of those computers cost $4000 and software programs started at around $40 but some were over $100. Unless you were working in the industry how would you even make the money back without a modern internet? You were better off spending that money on a car even they didn't depreciate as fast as new computers or expensive software.

The internet was better because big sites played a smaller role and it was an unregulated new frontier like the wild west through the early 2000s. But really it was better because there was almost nothing to do so a lot of people used it for a few minutes on their lunch break to check their email and check the news headlines and then went on with their lives and still put effort into their relationships.

Image

Computing and the internet before the arrival of Youtube, Facebook, and dual-core processors could have and should have been a lot better but it wasn't in large part due to some greedy key players like Bill Gates. And millions of trolls and scam-artists and opportunists like PAG. If the internet was all Winstons it could have been a great place but it had enough people like PAG and Roosh to make it bad and slow down progress.

The internet was better in the old days. Now it's bogged down with bullshit and I've uninstalled all my social media.

Also web development was a good career back then when all you needed to know was ASP, SQL Server and JavaScript. Now you've got to know 100 JavaScript frameworks, multithreading and 1000 other things.

Did anyone have a Pentium? I opened my box and overclocked my P75 to like P133 or something. It made Quake even more awesome.
