This article contains a lot of misleading information, and also the exchange rate (yen/USD) is totally wrong.
If you are a single Japanese man or woman without debts (age between 18 and 55) and you are willing to do any work regularly, you can easily pay for your own little room around Tokyo.
There is no excuse for living permanently in an internet shop except your own shortcoming - this is mostly because of alcohol and gambling.
