It isn't pronounced like the 'n' word - it is more 'neigh-guh' I don't know why the professor used this word in his communication class. He's now in big trouble if it has made national news. All very silly.

The Russian word for black is actually 'neger' so...

It is idiotic to put people on review. This makes me wonder if politically correct liberalism isn't actually a form of mass mental illness. My guess is a university at a less liberal university in the south or midwest wouldn't have made a big deal about it. But maybe there was a policy in place they need to go through first. If he'd had mixed it in with a few other examples, like 'cho gi' or whatever that is they say in Korea and a few other words, then maybe it wouldn't be an issue.MatureDJ wrote: ↑September 11th, 2020, 2:34 pmhttps://www.nationalreview.com/news/usc ... cial-slur/
A lot of people would pronounce the country name 'Niger' in a manner that might offend others. In Indonesia, the word for black people of African heritage is negro. The word for the color black is hitam. If I'm speaking to my wife in Indonesian around American black people, I say 'orang hitam'-- literally black people, so as not to use the word 'Negro' which has come to be considered offensive in the US.
One of my concerns with the black lives matter movement is that protests in Europe may transport some of our baggage about taboo words not to use, and create wounds there that have been kept open here for many generations here.

Actually in Russian it is “Chorni.” Chorni can also refer to black-haired people’s like Armenians and Georgians. When people see me in Russian-speaking places, I sometimes here them whisper, "Chorni-Amerikanski" as if to guess where I am from. Other times I hear "Zapadni Parren" for Western guy.
I have lived around in the former Soviet Union off and on since 2006 and I have never heard “Neger” apart from a Russian hip hop song. Not to say that is never used there, but I have never encountered it.

You're right, though apparently, 'negr' is used to describe the person rather than the actual colour.Contrarian Expatriate wrote: ↑September 12th, 2020, 11:46 amActually in Russian it is “Chorni.” Chorni can also refer to black-haired people’s like Armenians and Georgians. I never heard it being used either but then the above information was gleaned whilst reading about it. Not actual experience.

In Russian, it is " negr". Used liberally. Just because you never heard it, does not mean it's not used. It's in any kind of written Russian as well. In the USSR times, black people who were Soviet citizens, had IDs in which it said, "nationality: NEGR".
and here, you have an ID for a Jewish person. It says, "nationality: Hebrew"'.
Again, to remind one: just because you do not see something, do not hear something, etc, it does not mean it does not happen or does not exist.

You overlooked the fact that very point was made already above.Contrarian Expatriate wrote: I have lived around in the former Soviet Union off and on since 2006 and I have never heard “Neger” apart from a Russian hip hop song. Not to say that is never used there, but I have never encountered it.
Also, your pointing out of nationality is slightly misleading to a Western reader. Nationality, in the Russian context, means ethnic group, not citizenship thanks to Lenin's decree. Jews have been there for centuries and consider themselves just as Russian as Slavic Russians. In fact, there is evidence that many Russian Jews don't even know about their Jewish origins and they function as everyday, average Russians.
