The Lefty Expat.

The lefty expat may not be a socialist in the political or economic sense, but he usually inherits social/SJW ideas from the Western left. In his mind, the following truisms seem to be undisputed pillars of belief:
The straight, white Christian ( or Jewish) male is bad and guilty by default. If anything bad happens to him, he deserved it because he must have done something wrong or stupid or offensive/racist. That person attracts bad events thru the Law of Attraction and by putting out negative vibes.
Non-white, non-Judeo Christian, non-male people are good by default. The Law of Attraction does not work with them. If anything bad happens to them, it is not their fault, but a result of randomness or ignorance resulting from oppression by the above. Their cultural practices are unassailable no matter what they do. They deserve compassion no matter their actions or what happens to them.
For example:
If some bad event occurs in a non-white non-Christian country, he will often say this: "I've never seen it and/or it's never happened to me". Therefore,it does not happen at all, he says.
Also, according to him:
A 55 year old Western man with a 25 year old wife is a sick perv.
A 70 year old gay man in a bath house with three 20 year old young men is perfectly normal because it's their unique sexuality.
A straight Western man in Pat Pong is a despicable sex tourist. But a gay man in the gay section of Pat Pong is exercising his unique preference and freedom of choice.
An anti-gay Western man is a bigot. An anti-gay Muslim man is perfectly OK and beyond criticism.
Slovakia not allowing mosques is a racist country. Saudi Arabia not allowing churches is perfectly OK.
A Filipina swindled a Western man and ran away with his money to another man. Well, the Western man is an a--hole probably and a dum---, and it's all his fault.
A Western man swindled a Filipina and left her for another. Poor Filipina and an evil Western man!
Calling E/SE Asian people "Orientals" ( people from where the sun rises) is racist.
E/SE Asian people calling you white devil, foreign devil, farang, etc. is perfectly normal as those words are not pejorative and are a product of their unique cultures. A Singaporean called you a "Red Haired Monkey"? Well, it's al your fault. You people sold opium to them!
White, Anglo people are responsible for slavery, but not Latin Americans or Arabs even though they practiced slavery to a much greater extent and for much longer.
However, if there is a conflict between two non-white, non-Christian and non-male units, the lefty expat will not make any comment because he does not know whose side to take and who to blame. If a SE Asian girl is abused by a Korean, he will be quiet.

The worst lot are the Soi dogs who live right on Sukhumvit next to Soi Cowboy and Nana and swear up and down that they've never barfined a girl. They sit in the outdoor patio bars drinking already at 1pm, every day of the week.
Generally people unhappy enough with their existence to park themselves in the Southeast Asian third world are going to have some screws loose from whatever happened to them back home. That goes from the left and the right. I'm not sure that living in Thailand makes it any better, either. Many people go further off the deep end.

That's me! I am a socialist politically, pretty left wing and am an anti-racist, believe in equality between men and women and believe that LGBT should have equal rights alongside straight people. I realise I am a minority here on HA but I am happy to give you my viewpoints based on a socialist/SJW perspective... hope you don't mind!

I don't think anyone really believes that - there are extremists everywhere who say stupid things but most left wing people don't believe that for a moment however - there are people of that demographic who are getting their shit called out upon whereas in years gone by, that never used to happen and these days, they have to defend their points of views - the safe echo chamber has gone - for us all - not just straight white men and if they say something stupid/offensive/racist then they're going to get called out and if they cannot defend their viewpoints then they're going to suffer the consequences of what they have said.

You CANNOT have been watching the news if you really truly think anyone believes that - anyone cheering on the Taliban taking over Afghanistan again? No, they're not - do you think anyone thinks that Idi Amin, Robert Mugabe, Pol Pot etc etc are 'good people by default'? Very few people think that.

There are non-white arseholes as well as white arseholes - I don't think anyone would say otherwise.

Yeah, you do get that but in my experience, you get it from usually people of a more right-wing bent who are lamenting 'snowflakes' for not adapting and for them to have the need to 'toughen up' though you might be correct that there are some expats who adopt a pollyanna view of their adopted homeland and state that everything is perfect and nothing bad happens to them - this annoying behaviour can be attributed to both sides of the political spectrum amongst expats.

I don't think people would look on the 70 year old gay man on any more a favourable light that your other example but why not make them equal? Why not a 70 year old western man with a 20 year old wife and a 55 year old gay man with three 25 year old bufties in a bath house... I don't think any scenario is going to get people cheering from the sidelines... you just have to understand that people are quite narrow minded about other peoples life choices (a favourite stance of the right wing) and that people of all political viewpoints are going to judge.

Sometimes, men are dimwits and ignore the warning signs and marry unsuitable women - let's get this right - what do you think a 21 year old Filipina wants to do with a man of 60 years old? Do you think if the Philippines was a first world country 21 year old girls would date fat, 60 year old men? Because Asia to a lot of Asians (especially the Chinese) isn't in the 'east' so they're not 'Orientals' because they think they're in the centre of the world and not Greenwich in London - to term them 'oriental' is to label them from a very westerncentric view of the world and them and I can understand why they would object to that term.

Why not call them by their nationality or 'Asian'?

Nope, as a left wing snowflake, SJW, environmentally friendly lefty - I find those terms either racist/xenophobic and mired in stupid ignorance - and I think most people do - the reason in my opinion most expats don't rise to their xenophobia/racism is because most expats have a superiority complex towards these people and don't expect anything better from the more ignorant of the local people they're around - that is all ends of the political spectrum by the way.

I think most people who have read a history book realise the French, Spanish, the Dutch, the Danes, the Portuguese etc etc practised slavery.

I generally get along with most people regardless of political persuasion because I'm not a wanker who makes politics into his whole identity, but one of the few types of 'lefties' I have gotten into fierce arguments with are those who idolize China as some sort of socialist utopia. Whereas, if you ask me from my own experience in the Philippines, they're pretty much state capitalist colonialist fuckers at this point. Where do you as a British socialist stand on that issue? I mean I don't 'hate' China as a country at all but at the same time, I'm not at all fond of the government and how it operates. I've seen quite a bit of Western socialists who sort of idolize it and act as if it can do no wrong and those folks always rub me the wrong way.

Meanwhile in the Philippines I've actually befriended people in the New People's Army (NPA), a Communist insurgency group. Some of their most daring raids aren't on the Philippine ary, but attacking the equipment of Chinese mining corporations who are destroying the environment and taking precious minerals without paying the Filipino's their fair share. The notion of actual Commies attacking 'Commies-in-name-only' has never not been hilarious to me and in a way, it's been quite eye-opening.

China is a capitalist dictatorship, there is nothing 'socialist' about it - if you don't have money then you don't get - from university education, cancer treatment, wife giving birth - even high school isn't free - there is next to nothing free in this country - so I am not in China because it is a 'socialist utopia' because it isn't and anyone who says otherwise has never been here. The nearest we have to 'socialist utopias' are our own countries and the Scandinavians - moreso than the Chinese and the Vietnamese anyway.

I think the post above this one is the first time I have ever aired my political slant on this forum after many years - I don't go around politicising my views though they are my views, they play a part of my social and moral compass but it isn't something that I go around protelysing about - it is just that when I read what Ladislav had to say I just thought he was totally wrong on - well, most of it... I don't know anyone who thinks that way.

China's foreign policy is a mixture of good and bad - in Africa they are the ones building the roads and the hospitals because if they weren't doing it, nobody else would. They're the ones building waterpipes and bringing in sanitation to many parts of Africa - of course, it is for their own benefit as they have basically bought the whole f***ing lot lock-stock-and-barrell from corrupt leaders of various African states but still, the people there will have access to most mod cons that they never would have otherwise - it's good they will get these things but bad they are about to be colonised again.

Chinese innvestment has made Peru and other Pacific rim countries in South America rich - the Chinese buy lots of copper, fruit and vegetables from the Peruvians and that has changed that country massively over the past twenty years - but of course, they have bad intentions also - what they're not and I don't think they will ever pretend to be are the saviours of the world (The Americans) the civilising order of the world (the British...) with the Chinese, you will get what you expect.

I can see where both Yick and Ladislav are coming from. I think Ladislav is identifying something, but he's someone who wrestles with very big ideas and doesn't always spend enough time working out how to write them down. And that's probably for the lack of a worthwhile audience. I also get Yick's stand, just because there are a few annoying lefties around, don't throw out all their ideas and don't make crazy generalizations.

I do remember as a young child in the 1980s that the Regeanite conservatives were the ones who looked down their noses at you (or is this the false memory?). But now certainly it's the wokesters casting deprecating stares.
