About Thai ladies

Hi guys as of now Thailand is my Plan B in the Southeast Asia region, right next to Vietnam my Plan A. However, I've heard many horror stories about the dating scene in Thailand. Many websites I've visited say that the lower class women will likely scam you, while the upper class women will be extremely picky and normally only date/marry marry their own men (is this the same in other Southeast Asian countries?). Also heard it's getting more and more expensive to live in Thailand.
#2 in the Don'ts section in this link makes me feel a bit daunted:

If I do end up going to Thailand over Vietnam (I haven't done any work in talking to Thai ladies yet except for this 18 year old Thai girl from Pattaya that once contacted me on www.thaifriendly.com before both of us had to start subscribing), I doubt my ability to get a decent woman in the dating scene if what the websites say is true. Aim middle and upper class they won't likely pick you, aim lower they are likely desperate.
I know AiB will surely call me irrational and chicken once he sees this, but I really don't have experience.
Technically I am not what Thais call a 'farang', as I am Chinese by ethnicity.
So what to do if I end up entering the Thai dating scene so I can get a decent woman? Are Thais tolerant of age differences if the guy is only the same age or slightly younger as them? At my age I can't go for much younger girls because I'm as young as dating can get. Don't think going to a Thai high school and picking up girls over there would be really viable.
I know a Taiwanese-American guy on here that reported success with an Isaan woman, but I don't know if I am going to be that lucky. So what should I do? Get a Thai girl of Chinese descent?
How are the IQs of Thai people (i.e. knowledge, ability to hold a conversation) compared to China and Vietnam?
P.S. I know a Canadian man who taught math at an international school run by Catholics in Bangkok (he will go back there to retire, likely), and he told me a fairly well off Norwegian friend of his in Bangkok is married to a Thai woman who is a member of the Parliament.
