I’ve lived in the Philippines all of my life, but I have seen and talked to many foreigners to know enough about their motivations and intentions for coming here. Just as expats who come here have good and have bad views about Filipinos, we also have good and bad views about them too.

This article is my take on the different types of expats who come here to Manila.

1. The “customers”- These are the expats looking for the next girl to spend the night with…They’re practically everywhere! At first, I thought most of them hang out in Makati Ave, the unofficial red light district of the Philippines, but over the years, I’ve noticed they’re slowly invading even the most unexpected places to pick up women. They’re in coffee shops, ogling women and hoping someone joins them in broad daylight! When I was thirteen, an old guy asked if I could keep him company in exchange for coffee. I don’t know how drunk or high that guy was to think I’m the type of girl who would agree. It should have been obvious because I was wearing a school uniform! Heck, they’re even at Mickey D’s at the mall near my place! And no, they’re not there to eat a burger! They’re just sitting at the tables outside, crowding the space for actual dinners, while waiting for someone to keep them “company.” How do I know that they’re looking for women? That’s easy… They haven’t ordered anything because there’s nothing on their table and they’re always ogling the girls walking by. Occasionally, I’d see a couple of them eating with a woman too young to be their wife and too provocatively dressed to be their daughter. It’s also obvious in their body language that they’ve just met. In some cases, it’s so obvious that they’re “getting to know each other” and “haggling” for the price of the service because they talk too loud it’s impossible not to hear. Some of you might say that I’m too judgmental, but if you’ve seen this many times, like I have, you’ll probably think of the same thing.

Even Greenbelt, one of the upscale malls in the Metro has been invaded by sex tourism and expats looking for short-term happiness. How do I know this? Well, I remember quite clearly… It was almost midnight and I was in Greenbelt, on my way to the cinema to watch a movie. It was a work night, but there were so many people when the mall should have been quiet by that time. I noticed there were so many women and so many foreigners. At first, I thought there was a party but I was so wrong!

I heard a guy shout, “Hey, I’ll pay you 500 (pesos) to come with me!” The nerve of him, I wanted to punch his face! It’s too low; 500 PHP is only about 12 USD. The girl he was shouting at looked back then walked away. Either she was seriously humiliated for being called out like that, or she thought 500 was too low a price. The sad part was, the guy was approached by a couple of other girls. Perhaps for these women, 500 pesos was enough. I don’t blame them because I know that for some people, 500 pesos is 500 pesos, regardless of how they earned it. Its money they need to put food on the table.

2. The self-proclaimed kings and queens - Aside from expats fueling the sex tourism industry, there are those who abuse the colonial mentality of Filipinos. These foreigners come here thinking they’d be treated like kings and queens, just because they’re foreigners! I see them almost every day, strutting as if they own the place. They cut people in line, berate waiters for not doing their request, and drive like they own the streets!

Sadly, there is some grain of truth to this belief. Filipinos have been colonized for more than 300 years, and this has affected the way most Filipinos see foreigners. The popular thinking is- “Pag kano, mayaman,” which translates to, “If you’re white, you’re rich.” The unspoken belief here is – “If you’re white, then you’re rich, and so we should treat you well so you will give us your money.

Perhaps, some Filipinos might hate me for saying this. I understand. I’m just saying things as I see it. Even expats who have lived here for so many years will agree with me. I’ve read some blogs, where expats complain how their extended relatives think of them as an “ATM Machine.”

But there’s a catch – Not all Filipinos look up to foreigners. Not all Filipinos are willing to go the extra mile to accommodate your whims. I think it’s safe to say that you can expect preferential treatment from people who need money from you and those who are required to bend over every time because their “tip” depends on it.

I know not all foreigners who come here are like this, but I want to mention it here because there’s just so many of them. Some even broadcast the preferential treatment they’re getting, and this only fuels the misconception that all Filipinos will admire and give them preferential treatment

3. Opportunist business men- These are the expats who come here to take advantage of the cheap labor. It’s very affordable to hire people here for three reasons,

Unemployment rates are high, so people are willing to take low-paying jobs (even dangerous, low paying jobs) just to put food on the table.
Most employers compute an employer’s salary on a monthly rate, not per hour like in Western countries. An ESL teacher, for instance, can get anywhere from 12,000 pesos (300 USD) to 30,000 pesos a month (770 USD). That’s very cheap compared to the $5-12 USD per hour required by employees in other Western and Southeast Asian countries.
Most Filipinos don’t know better. I hate to say this, but it’s true. Most employees would take whatever amount is given to them during the job offer, because they don’t know that they could get more and they fear that if they negotiate, the job will be offered to someone else.
From this perspective, I can see why so many foreigners want to outsource, or set up a brick and mortar business here. While some of these entrepreneurs are here doing honest to goodness business, some of them blatantly exploit the labor rights of their employees. They deduct the taxes of their employees, but they don’t report it to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), and they don’t provide the government mandated benefits every employee should have.

These slave drivers overwork their employees, but they don’t even have the decency to pay the benefits the employees are entitled to receive. In some cases, even accidents at work aren’t shouldered by employers. And then, when their employees have had enough, they go on strike or complain about their boss to a public-service show, such as “Isumbong Mo Kay Tulfo”. Tulfo is a public servant, who hosts a TV show and radio program where he reprimands and threatens law offenders in TV, including unlawful entrepreneurs who abuse the rights of their employees.

What does an opportunist businessman think of this? Well, this show has been going on for ages, so I can tell you for a fact that most of these people, even after they were caught, are adamant that they’ve done nothing wrong! It’s ridiculous!

4. Snowbirds and Retired Military- These are old men, mostly retired from the Military who have decided to retire here because they were once stationed here back in the good old days of their youth. Some of them want to settle here because they fell in love with the place, while others are just looking for a warm place to retire comfortably, despite their small pension. Sometimes, I’d see them drinking at a local bar, having a good time with other expats, who perhaps were in the same battalion as they were.

5. The Tourist- These are the backpackers, serial travelers and nomads I see in the Metro. Most of the time, they look lost, sometimes they look fascinated or grossed out by what they’re seeing. They’re often complaining about the dirt, the pollution, and the traffic. When I see these whiners, I often think how poor and unkempt my country is to their eyes. I also pity them, because they’re wasting their days touring the city, when they could go out of the Metro and actually see what the Philippines has to offer. I mean, why come here, and visit the mall when there’s probably a better and even bigger mall in your own country? If they can just go for a short drive outside Metro Manila, they’d see the Philippines in a different light.

I’m sure there are foreigners who come here that don’t fall into any of these categories. I also don’t claim to have made a complete list of stereotypes, these are just a few that I have noticed. I wrote this article to give would-be visitors to my country an idea of how foreigners are seen and treated. I hope that this article will answer some of your questions regarding the cultural differences, and the many ways a Filipino views a foreigner or “Kano,” as locals call them.

The issue here is assimilation. The Philippines has created an environment for low life's to breed. Its just retarded to blame sexpats and other bottom feeders who frequent Philippines, because it only has the window for those kinds of people.

All the laws in Philippines are not conducive for good guys to settle in. There are no incentives for a good western guy to come to Philippines. The immigration laws, does not allow one to own land, get a job, earn a living through art etc....

pretty much anything a white guy is good at is not allowed in Philippines.

1. A white guy cannot just come to Manila and start a business, get a job, start painting taal valcono and sell it on the streets of Manila.

2. He cannot sing local tagalog songs - make an album to sell among Filipinos or get hired in bars.

3. He cannot just open a tattoo shop

3. Westerns have excellent skills in Mechanical related stuff - He cannot just come and open a custom cars company in Philippines.

4. On professional end, You cannot become a lawyer, doctor, engineer in Philippines unless hired by a corporation.

5. If you are going though tough times, you cannot just come to Philippines and become a taxi driver to earn a living and get settled in slowly like many filipinos do when they to go western countries.

Everything is extremely squeezed for a foreigner in PHilippines who wants to play by the rules.

In short..if you are a good guy. there is nothing for you to begin with, your hands are tied to earn a decent living and be the good guy you are. Philippines conditions are best suited for the perverts. It's the same story for all third world countries.

Also, its of zero use learning the local language other than for day today matters and then they ask why didn't you learn tagalog if you have stayed here for so long. For what good reason.....I should learn your third world language..are you giving me a citizenship, job, voting rights, passport. Any decent country for example Germany gives you a permanent residency, pension etc once you are proficient in German after some time....What will i get learning tagalog...not get cheated enough, less haggle with prices in shops. I will never be a part of Philippines even if I learn tagalog, marry a filipina, stay in Philippines for a decade or more.

Where are my rights...Can i become the mayor of manila, senator of one of the provinces like some filipinos, asians have become in white countries.

What an ignorant, if a foreigner offers php 500,- may I ask how much a Filipino male worker will offer? USD 12,- is more than his daily wage after 8 hours of hard work.

The cousin of my Filipina fosterdaughter 20y/o is working full-time at Jollibee - the only job she could find after looking around for about 6 months in Cebu/Mandaue. Starting 3 PM, going home around 11:30 PM, and is receiving for her 8 hour working shift php 360.-, but again some tax and health insurance is deducted from her little income.

Despite she is poor, she would never accept any offer money for sex. The amount, php 500,- or php 5000,- or whatever is irrelevant for her deep Catholic morality.

It is not the fault of the foreign visitor that Philippines is impoverished and corrupt. Compared to other Asian countries, like Japan or Thailand, only a few foreigners are visiting the Philippines.

Many of these foreign visitors are not sex-customers, but have a Philippine family, or they try to help poor people in Philippines otherwise.

This is why it is not easy getting with Filipinas as much as one may think, especially if they think this way, as many of them do. I will comment on each point and give the correct interpretations of reality.

1. Makati Ave is not the unofficial red light district of Makati, I wish. What a shutin retard. There is a small side street off of Makati Ave that would be considered a red light district (Burgos), however even that street has seen its better days and is currently dying a slow death as half the places cater to Arabic speaking foreigners now, I thought their Islamic religion didn't go for this kind of thing? Anyways, Glorietta and Greenbelt are surrounded by 5 star hotels, Dusit, InterContinental and Shangri-LA, of course they will build high end stores and restaurants/bars to attract high end foreigner spending. Most of the foreigners there are just hanging out and probably initially don't know that a lot of the sexy girls hanging around in the evenings are working girls, they generally don't act like whores until you think you scored a freeby and they ask for taxi money. Tourists didn't create this, the local women who wanted to make a quick buck created the whole situation. Of course if the younger looking women start coming onto a guy after he has been drinking he will probably not resist her advances. Thus over many years of this happening any socially conscious Filipino will know there are working girls spread around and mingling with the regular bar patrons. I mean I can walk from my work through that area on any evening and without trying get propositioned. I'm not looking for it, they are looking for me. The businesses and police know whats going on and they don't stop it so this wench should not be blaming old foreigners but the young Whorish Filipinas trying to trick men that they are regular girls having fun rather than whores.

Plus if idiotic Mayor Lim didn't destroy red light Malate in the 90's then maybe this idiot could enjoy her Glorrietta/Greenbelt slut free. The problem in PI is every time a new mayor gets elected and if he/she is not from the previous family then they go and remodel the entire city after what they feel it should be. Malate used to be party central but he destroyed all the bars there thinking the area could still thrive, guess what it turned into a shit hole. After his tems were up he went to congress and some other mayor came in and started reviving the nightlife a bit, not the same as before but ok. He revitalized Roxas BLVD and it was fun walking around there on the weekends. Then Lim couldnt run for congress anymore and decided to get his old mayor job back, destroyed everything the previous mayor had tried fixing and almost got rid of EVERY bar in Malate with his corruption schemes. Even LA Cafe (Manila Cafe now) barely survived. He is so stupid he is the one that basically caused the Hong Kong tourists to be killed on the bus hijacking a few years ago.The only thing that's in Malate now are a few Japanese/Korean KTV bars, Casinos and lots of street people/beggars.

The Filipinos own idiotic leadership is what causes these issues not foreigners.

Most foreigners do not come to the Philippines to boss Filipinos around! This is actually created by the upper classes in this country and most Foreigners could care less about being served and cowtowed to. The local upper classes are the ones that act like assholes in stores and businesses demanding employees to act like slaves or servants, it's not the foreigners generally. I have to run around the country staying at higher end hotels and they are all like that around the country. Thus, employees are trained to act like this. I find it annoying as hell personally. I can't go shopping without the people working there following me around looking over my shoulder half the time, its totally annoying. And then when you actually need their help more than half the time they are useless in regards to answering questions or whatever. Filipinos have an inferiority complex, its not my fault that they do and many over react to people they think have money, which includes travelers. That's a cultural thing that has to be breeded out of them rather than blaming it on the foreigner causing it all.

Cheap labor, ha ha that's a laugher. If you're coming to PI to open a business cause you think your going to save much money hiring Filipinos, good luck! I think its difficult to find good, competent help in PI as most of them have moved overseas to work. You would spend more money trying to train them right and make sure they don't mess up your business more than they help. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for... Actually the business laws are not that great here, especially for foreigners. A lot of the large businesses don't even hire permanent employees cause of the stupid laws here. They have to renew contracts every 6 months cause after 6 months they can't be fired and all other kinds of BS. The Philippines always touts how business friendly it is but its not.

Most retired guys who have pensions have a steady GF or have a family here. Some are whore mongers but not as many as one my think. I don't think there are many snowbirds here, either they live here most of the year or casually visit. BTW, for a Filipna to use the term 'snowbird' means she is probably from the upper middle class and has traveled and gone to private schools so you know she thinks her shit don't stink and knows everything. I love to shoot these ones down where I work.

Every tourist is a backpacker and she pity's them? Maybe some travelers want to hang out in Manila or they start there before traveling to other destinations. Completely judgmental accusations and false observations based on her limited sckewed view of reality.

She is an example of a Filipina that is probably not very different than a Western women. You'll find most of the upper level women are just as bad as Western women but in their own cultural ways. Just cause she is not A Western women doesn't mean she isn't a pain in the ass to deal with and a complete moron in regard to understanding true reality. So many Filipinos are ignorant about what is going on in their own country, it's scary. They THINK they know, but they don't.

+1 ! I could not have said it better! I do not get so many men talking about the middle and upper class girls, as if they are typically some kind of accomplishment. Gabriela types who simper on and on about foreigners "exploiting the poor Filipinas" when in reality,most of the elites in the Philippines are worse than pond scum, and exploit Filipinos beyond what any foreigner could imagine. Most Filipinos know squat about their own history and often lack even basic insight into the workings of their own culture.

It's like sittiing in the Airport @ Manila waiting for my CDO bound flight and talking with Luzon Filipinos. I tell them I am going to
Mindanao and they say, "Mindanao? That is SO DANGEROUS!" I ask if they have ever been there, "Oh no! I might die! Abbu Sayyef!" while they draw their finger across their throat in a cutting motion. They are in love with their own ignorance.

Philippines is only good for sex tourism or to "buy" a wife half your age and force her to stay in her home country. Other than that I see no advantage to moving there.

I always hear travelers saying they date and have sex with middle and upper classed Filipinas. I've always said they are not and people from those classes are not interested in foreigners. Some people judge them as middle classed because they have a college degree. Big deal, Filipinas graduate high school at 16 so finish college at 20. Most colleges are inexpensive so many have degrees.

I currently work in IT (computers) in the USA. We use an American company that has an office in the in the Philippines for our Quality Assurance. There are many Filipina girls working for this American company. They were all thrilled to work for a foreign company because it pays so much better than a Filipino company and treats them better too. I asked two of the Filipina young women that I work with, do you know any Americans. Their answer was none! They've never met a single American outside of work. I asked did you ever chat with any Westerners on the internet. They both told me NO! They said none of their friends had and they had no desire to. What this shows me is that middle classed Manila girls have no desire to meet foreigners. They are very happy with themselves and their country and want to date only Filipino men. Based on income, the lower class make up about 90% of the Philippine population. Basically middle classed Pinays have no interest in foreign men. It is this way in the Philippines and this way in all countries western men go to date. It is just a fantasy that Western men date high end women in the countries they visit!

I always hear travelers saying they date and have sex with middle and upper classed Filipinas. I've always said they are not and people from those classes are not interested in foreigners. Some people judge them as middle classed because they have a college degree. Big deal, Filipinas graduate high school at 16 so finish college at 20. Most colleges are inexpensive so many have degrees.

Yeah If only it was true they were all trying to go after us

actually 36,000 a month is above average even among middle class. Middle class is more like 15,000 a month and up. Minimum wage is about 8000 if you work 25 days a month and many dont even work that much due to having part time jobs or some job that isn't even real. Average doctors make like 80,000 in phil to give you a perspective. An attorney or some really high level professional might make 36,000 a month. maybe a little higher in manila but not much more.
