This guy goes over the pros and cons of Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur is not my favorite place. Malaysia is somehow British-style administrated. Quite boring, difficult and costly to buy your own home.
Food is better in Thailand, much more tasty and more choice. Malaysia is in general more expensive than Thailand.
Also to notice, Malaysia is strongly orientated to Islam, which is not my way of life anyway.

Since many years I do not visit Malaysia anymore. I prefer Thailand (where I have a condominium for holidays/retirement) and Philippines and sometimes Cambodia. However my permanent home is in Japan, for me the best place in Asia since more than 4 decades.

To compare Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur is not easy, quite different way of life and Bangkok is much larger than Kuala Lumpur.
Bangkok has also better and more airlinks and offers cheaper airfares.

I love Malaysia and Penang and Ipoh, they're Chinese cities and really feel home in them, next will be Kuching - probably because I am British it feels familiar. I have never been to any of the Malay majority cities and I don't think they would be my cup of tea at all.

Just checked out Sibu in Sarawak, that might be worth a visit after all.
