A Man's Guide to Life and Love in the Philippines - Larry Elterman

Post by Winston »

Someone showed me a copy of this ebook. I read through some of it and found it to be very accurate about living and dating in the Philippines. The author breaks it down well, and describes the good and the ugly, without any political correctness. It gives you a bigger picture view of the whole situation and your choices, and he has a great section where he describes the pros, cons and motivations of each type of Filipina that you will encounter. It was very accurate.

So I would personally recommend it for those of you who want to go to the PH.

I emailed the author and he told me that you can get it from his website, which contains his articles as well.

I read this book about a year ago and still have it in my Kindle. I think its pretty comprehensive and well written. Unlike Thailand, Philippines is not covered by many books geared to expats interested in the local women. That makes this book a must read in the field. I hope Larry does join this forum. I have some follow-up questions for him.

Larry has already joined this forum under LarryElterman. He posted a few responses already in other threads. Feel free to post your follow up questions for him in this thread. He will see them.

Btw, Larry recently did an interview with Steve Hoca, and I heard it went well. I will post the link to it when it becomes available.

Hey I'm already more than half way through and still listening. You're doing great Larry. I like the way you keep steering Steve away from bashing American women to the much more interesting topic of the Philippines and its women.

It was a good interview. I liked Steve's comment about his family not understanding why he wants a foreign woman. I never talk about it with my family either, they will never understand.

Also, Larry's comment, "The longer you stay in the Philippines the more likely you are to meet a higher quality woman"(paraphrasing) was worth noting.

I'm halfway through it too. This one is very balanced and informative. It lags in a few moments (probably cause it was 2am Steve's time and he was tired), but overall very sensible and realistic, yet optimistic at the same time. I agreed with pretty much everything said in the interview.

The only disagreements I heard were over trivial things, and even then it wasn't about right or wrong, true or false, but a matter of degrees and people.

Great interview Larry. Wish it had been even longer and more detailed. I can tell you're brimming with knowledge about the most popular part of Abroad on Winston's site.

I'm guessing the Chinese gals you approached were Filipina Chinese for the most part. I'm not surprised you got a cold reception. I think a lot of the Chinese in countries where westerners are often seen with bar girls and pay-for-play companionship try to avoid associating with us. They see themselves as set apart from the indigenous locals and above their poverty and hard life, even if they too come from a relatively modest family.

BTW, first follow-up question: Do those high interest rate opportunities with regional banks still exist? Can you post some fresh info on this forum about that?

I thought this interview pretty much covered everything and answered the important questions.
Depends on your definition of 'everything'. Larry is a Philippines specialist and can talk details.

I was hoping he would spend some time comparing and contrasting key cities and areas where expats tend to settle since there are big differences in life quality, weather, attitude of the locals, and girls.

Also, I Googled that guy he mentioned who runs a site about working without a base and came up dry so would like to have heard a bit more about his services.

And finally, since Philippines does not have great work opportunities and guys need ways to generate cash for living expenses, I wish he would have spent a little time talking about local investment options (real estate buy to rent market, bank and CP interest rates, scams, and condo purchase rules and opportunities).

Funny I had the same thoughts and questions. I was wondering who that guy Larry mentioned was as well. He said "Dan" something and then the conversation changed to something else. But he never got around to spelling it, so you probably googled the name wrong. I've already emailed Larry to ask him about it.

I was also thinking that maybe he could compare cities in the Philippines. But then again, he'd probably just say the basics, like Cebu is cleaner and more modern, and less scams, etc. So no biggie.

He would probably say that investing in the Philippines is risky and wouldn't recommend it.

Do you plan to go to the Philippines? If so, we would love to show you around.

But I think you are set with residual income from your investments and savings right? So this shouldn't be a concern for you, is that correct? If this question is too private, you don't have to answer of course.

Just got an email from Larry about the guy he was referring to in his interview about making money with websites. Here is the info he gave me about him.
ya, his name is Dan Andrews

Here are some of his web sites

http://www.outsourcetothephilippines.com

http://www.LifestyleBusinessPodcast.com

http://www.TropicalMBA.com

http://manvsdebt.com/do-what-you-love-freedom-business

His thing is setting up web based businesses without needing a base. Everything is done from the computer, he goes where ever we wants go to. He specializes in driving traffic to web sites.

Like I said, I wish the interview w/Larry had had focused more on specific details related to the Philippines instead of tangential rants about the US and its women.

But it sounded like a Part 2 will follow at some stage. Perhaps we should post some Qs to Steve ahead of the next interview.

I noticed this, with annoyance, as well.

Steve - let your interviewees talk and stop interrupting them. Larry had about 12 times where he was saying something useful and insightful and you would cut him off, he would lose his train of thought, and his insight was lost. I know what the USA is like, I need info from an experienced hand on the ground in the RP.
