80-year-old Australian seeking Korean spouse

A rich 80-year-old Australian is openly seeking a Korean spouse, but his promise to reward his would-be wife with 2.5 billion won ($2.2 million) immediately drew harsh criticism, as well as applications.

“He is a very famous businessman here and in his country,� said Ko Jong-hwan, director at Uvis Marriage Information Group, said. “Due to his long relationship with Korea and his affection towards Koreans, he wants to spend the rest of his life with a Korean woman.�

Without elaborating more about the man Ko introduced him as a successful businessman with a personal fortune of 30 billion won, who lost his wife seven years ago.

His ideal woman should speak English to communicate, have feminine characteristics and be very thoughtful, and there is no restriction on age or education level, and the reward to his wife will be 1 billion won in cash and a house in Korea worth about 1.5 billion won, which will be notarized by a lawyer, Ko said.

The company plans to receive applications from candidates on its website until April 22 and arrange dates either in Korea or in Australia.

On its first day of the open proposal, the company received about 100 applications, but also drew criticism from the public.

“It’s really irritating. It looks like he is trying to buy a woman,� Kim Ji-yeon, a 36-year-old woman in Seoul, said. “Why does he need to reward his wife with money if he has a pure intention in the first place?�

Other matchmaking firms are skeptical of the proposal.

“Open marriage proposals aim to give singles more opportunities to meet potential partners and ultimately help them find a soul mate for a long-term relationship. But I’m quite skeptical about this proposal,� an official from a well-known matchmaking firm said.

He's 80 years old. He knows it's not for love and for him, it's worth the money. I'm sure that there are some catches in the prenup/contract and some more incentives for her to treat him right until he bites it.
