Ukraine has a lot of natural gas under Crimea and Donbass but no technology to extract it. It was about to sign some contracts with some big Western companies to start exploring it after its pro EU revolution.

If Ukraine started selling it, it would become very rich, ala Qatar, and Europe would not need Russian gas anymore.

Russia will lose their main source of income. Gazprom would go bankrupt, and the Russian elite would go kaput.

Russia is afraid of this competition. Having a rich, democratic Slavic country next to them instead of a bunch of farmers who they have always treated as hicks would be a major nuisance.

As long as Ukraine was pro-Russian, it was not a threat, and its presidents would not have become such competition - as they would do Russia's bidding. Once it became a pro-Western country, Russia got scared.

So, Russia invented some fairy tales about Ukrainians killing Russian speakers and started the war. Now, it has killed tens of thousands more Russian speakers in Ukraine than Ukraine ever would.

Follow the ( gas) money trail.

They could only become rich if they got their act together and prevented the Jews and other bastard criminals from plundering their wealth, and that doesn't seem all that likely without Russian help.

No doubt Hunter Biden, young Pelosi and other kleptocrats, junior and senior, were well positioned to join the boards of these "big western companies," but the evil Russkis had to spoil the party.

Question re 'follow the grain:' What happens to all the GMO fields big western companies planted in Ukraine after 2014, now that Russia controls much of the country? What part of Ukraine is its "breadbasket?" Russia has banned GMO.

I have to give it to Russia that they followed through with knocking out a lot of the b/s going in Ukraine including the biolabs and the azov satanic nazi battalion.

I hope Russia burns those GMO crops.

Russia can take over the fields and plant real food there.
