I don't think there is any difference. It's just a different use of the word.

As far as I know, the word tortoise is originally from French (la tortue) and used mainly in UK.
The word 'turtle' is used mainly in USA.

Both languages did not import anything in this case which sounds like German - the word I use in my native language is 'die Schildkröte'.
No similarity at all.

Thank you, I didn't know that. In German we use the same word for both, only adding 'land' or 'water'.
