f**k America. I'm not ashamed to say it. This place has been overrun by assholes and imbeciles. It's a struggle to have a real, down-to-earth, genuine conversation with most people in America. That has been my experience anyway. So many people here seem to be superficial and completely disconnected from reality. It's quite staggering and truly frightening at times.

I recently found this forum, and I decided to join because I have nobody in my personal life who is interested in traveling abroad. When I try to talk about it with friends and family they give me blank looks and say I'm crazy because I'll be kidnapped, killed, etc. Of course, this is f***ing stupid. I would like some place where I can interact with others who share my goals of permanently living abroad (my ultimate goal is to renounce my U.S. citizenship). My primary reason for desiring to expatriate is to avoid being consumed by the quiet desperation and silent misery that is so pervasive in American culture.

I have about 5-6 years (maybe less) until I pay off all of my student loans. After that I'll be getting a one way ticket out of this insane asylum. Right now I'm looking at South America. Paraguay would probably be my first stop because I understand that it is incredibly easy to get a second passport in Paraguay. If you have any experiences in S.A. you would like to share especially if you have experience or info pertaining to the acquisition of a citizenship, visa, or second passport in S.A. send me a PM. Also, if any of you have experience learning Spanish as a second language I would appreciate any suggestions on what the best approach would be.

Renounce your citizenship as soon as possible before they make it impossible with more laws. I would suggest, you try Asia for long term goals...China simply because of economic opportunity than South America. There are more options in Asia.

I don't want to learn an Asian language. I already have a basic understanding of Spanish (although it's certainly not conversational).

I am worried about them making it impossible to renounce also, but I doubt they would allow me to renounce before I've paid off the gov't loan sharks.

Don't give up your US citizenship right away, until you are really sure. The whole world has problems. Modern culture is a global disease. Latin America is better in some ways and worse in others. You have to spend some time there to get the full picture.

If you are stuck in America for another 5 years, you might try getting a job in San Diego and then you can cross to Mexico regularly to practice Spanish and learn the culture.

We all get that baloney. Where I live now in Ensenada is slightly safer than Los Angeles.

You aren't going to be able to do 5 years "hard time".

Plan on taking some trips to South America
......or visiting HA members in Mexico
......or (as FSchmidt suggests) living near the border and driving south.

Mexico is a fine place to get started, and residency is easy. Maybe easier than Paraguay. Just be able to show bank statements with income going in. I think that the income is supposed to be from a portable source, so you just have to explain verbally that your income is location-independent.

You just need to live here for 5-6 weeks straight right after stating the process, then you can go and come freely, and you are accruing time toward citizenship.

Mexico is a much freer country ythan the U.S. Everyone notices the difference these days, Americans and Mexicanos alike. But Paraguay will be even freer, and no U.S. influence.

Re language school there is one good one here in Ensenada, and also I know of one online, live via skype from Guatemala (using standard Spanish) for $10 an hour, in packages of $100.

If you need either just let me know.

But if you live here you can hire a bright college girl to come teach you for $4 an hour at your favorite cafe.

You aren't going to be able to do 5 years "hard time".

It does feel exactly like you're doing hard time when you live in america. Whenever I'm there I always aim to leave asap. The last time, I was there, I kept taking occasional trips up to Canada just to come up for air every once in awhile to keep from "drowning".
