Why do most American men brag, exaggerate and lie?
One of my hobbies is comparing cultures and psychology from a variety of countries. Growing up in the United States (Southern California to be exact), one thing I notice that makes us stand out from other countries/cultures is that we like to brag a lot (especially the men) about ourselves. Ive been to over 40 countries and I honestly cannot recall a time when I was in a foreign country and heard one of the locals brag about how much money he has or how many women he slept with. The following is my theory as to why American males brag so much. Please feel free to write your own opinions on the subject as well.
Most American men receive very little (if any female attention) in their life. Only a few (5-10%) are getting the overwhelming portion of female attention in this country. We are naturally social human beings that require attention from each other. The lack of social connectedness and lack of acceptance from the female gender creates a void in many of these American males. Therefore, many American males need to get this acceptance from their fellow male peers (via bragging/lying). It usually starts out in High School with things like sport achievements (Im an Allstar in Football, Im going to the NBA,Im being recruited to this college, etc), how many girls they are banging or how popular they are (I threw a party and 400 people showed up). In college, bragging about banging women, popularity (fraternities) and future careers are still common.
Once adulthood kicks in, life turns out to be more lonely and desperate for many American males. As the most overworked country in the world (typical American only gets 10 days of vacation a year), American men tend to work their lives away and try to find happiness through money and materialism. At this point in life materialistic purchases such as houses, boats and cars seem to serve as main bragging points.
My personal opinion is that humble and secure people dont need to brag. Their accomplishments do all the bragging for them. If you are really banging numerous model type women then why would you need to brag to another man about that? Shouldnt the fact that you banged these beautiful women make you happy and content enough without looking for another male's approval?
Do you think its an empty void that many of these American men have that compel them to brag (or make up stories) or is it the competitive American Corporate culture that plays a role in that you need to brag to succeed in life(job interviews, lying to make commission $$$, survival of the fittest).
The perfect example would be the boxer Floyd Mayweather who is about as arrogant and narcissistic as they come compared to humble Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao. Even though both fighters make millions and have numerous beautiful women to bang, Mayweather cant stop talking about how rich and great he is compared to Pacquiao who has still stayed humble throughout all his years of fame.
What is it about the American culture that creates this behavior?

Great observation International Gringo! Winston has talked about this too, that men in the US brag like hell to other men and will lie about how many women they dated and how many women they have slept with.International Gringo wrote:Most American men receive very little (if any female attention) in their life. Your right, in America men get almost NO attention from women. This creates a void in their life and men tend to fill this void by drinking and becoming work alcoholics.
I have often said, America is a great country to live in for men if they DON'T want to meet women or have a social life. If you want to be a work alcoholic, America is the best country in the world to do that.
"When I think about the idea of getting involved with an American woman, I don't know if I should laugh .............. or vomit!"
"Trying to meet women in America is like trying to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics."

Absolutely agree 100% on this.....I get lots of female attention thought...Only if its work or business related though....International Gringo wrote:One of my hobbies is comparing cultures and psychology from a variety of countries. I dont like to lie or brag either as I am humble by nature, but even I get caught up every now and then bragging and lying about conquests or going to these cool parties (moreso in college than now post college)....Lying and bragging is a way to cope with the toxic atmosphere in America....Social life in the USA is a drag to be honest.....
I thought when I went to college, that I would make friends with ease and meet women in my range as easily....Boy was I in for shock... My first semester was hardest...I had to join a fraternity for my social life to improve....In other words, I paid to have friends....*SMH*.....I wouldve been better off paying for a pro...At least I wouldve had sex and better value.....And all that talk of how they would be friends with me forever and that I would have this huge social network to contact...Hell I thought by joining a frat, that I would leverage the network I have to find a good job....THAT WAS A FLOP!....All the jobs I had, I did it on my own...
Years later, 5 years removed from college, none of these same people ever thought to contact me to say "hello, how are you"?...They dropped me like a bad habit....
I know in my heart and soul that you can have a better social life overseas, thats why Im working hard now to save some money to get the hell out of this hell hole....

The
I agree with what you said.I think that Greek Life is the epitome of the dysfunctional and narcissistic culture in America. In college, I dealt with the fraternity system from within and from the outside. I did one year at San Diego State (reputation as one of the nation's biggest party schools). Although, I was not a fraternity member at that time, I did attend many fraternity parties. Being an extremely social person, I literally approached hundreds and hundreds of females at these parties. Many of these girls were sorority girls and the first question they ask you when you talk to them is what fraternity you are in. Once you reply you are not in a fraternity then the conversation is over. It was about as exclusive as it gets. During the whole year at SDSU, I didnt get laid even once. I only had a few dates and got rejected hundreds if not thousands of times.
When I transferred to a smaller college in Los Angeles, I did join a fraternity (although the school did not have a huge party culture). Most of the parties we went to were hosted by our affiliate chapters at USC and UCLA. A lot of the time in the fraternity we were also being indoctrinated with the beliefs that we would be friends for life and that we would kill for one another if we had to. Even back then I knew this to be bullshit because most of these so called fraternity brothers were so narcissistic and selfish at their spiritual core that they only cared about getting individual attention and acceptance from their peers. Most of our social settings consisted of just us brothers talking about how much p***y we got (which was also a lie because we were not in a party culture to begin with). After a year of all this narcissism, bragging, egos and lying I decided to relinquish my membership from the fraternity. I found the Greek social environment to be toxic. Like Winston mentioned on previous posts it takes a certain type of fake/superficial person to fit into an environment like that. Most honest/ genuine guys in that environment will be friend zoned by the majority of the sorority females (preferring the Alpha Males instead) and seen as a non achieving loser by his more egotistical fraternity brothers. I do believe that the Fraternity environment is suppose to prepare their members for the Corporate work world to a certain degree. Those who lie, bully, are aggressive, deceitful, inconsiderate, arrogant, and braggarts tend to succeed in these financial institutions such as Wall Street, banks and commission wage jobs. Like many other young Americans, I had the illusion of college life (from family members, media, movies and peers) that college would be one big party orgy where sex would be easy and the social life would be genuine/fun.
It wasnt until I started traveling the world in which I started to live a genuine social life and had access to easy sex. The funny thing (like Winston says is that no one in the States tells us that this lifestyle truly does exist in many places overseas). Instead, we are indoctrinated by propaganda from the media and especially movies that all these so called hedonistic places exist here in the states.
Fifteen Years later, I wonder what my fellow fraternity brothers are doing now. If they are like most American men they are married (or divorced several times by now) to the typical middle aged heavy set American woman with a kid or two. Working their lives away behind some corporate cubicle trying to find happiness through materialism or some other superficial methods. The days of them so called banging hot young women (as they claimed back then) are over since American culture will not permit an older man to be with a younger woman (too taboo).
As of the women who rejected me back in college, nature has taken it's toll on them. No longer accustomed to the male attention they once had in their 20s, I assume most of them will be man hating feminists who have adopted many cats to keep them company.
Myself (im trying to be humble here), I have found inner peace and happiness in the Philippines. I date and I am intimate with many genuine attractive young women (in their 20s) where age difference is completely irrelevant. The social environment is genuine and social encounters are natural. I feel truly connected here as if at last I have finally found my home. I do remember my younger years in the states where I saw boisterous and inconsiderate ego filled Americans treating each other like shit. As a spiritual lesson, they showed me how not to treat another human being. I take this with me when I travel abroad and try to spread genuine interest, joy and good vibes to the people that I meet abroad.

I went to HA to look for an older thread about what assholes Western men have become; instead I found this new thread by International Gringo.
There is a preponderance of American men who are Assholes, Braggers, and Liars. I have had to cut off friends either because they became such jealous assholes or compulsive liars wanting to argue all the time. 20 years ago you seldom had this behavior. Today it is rampant. As America and the West does not provide men with women and happiness, lying has become endemic. I made the mistakes to share some travel and romance stories with people that I thought my friends, hoping they would travel too. Instead they just became jealous asshole liars. One guy I no longer talk to and the other I will probably quit talking to him totally too. Every conversation is about his imaginary live in girl friend who just happens to be an nymphomaniac and who never causes him any problems. Whenever we talk on the phone, all he wants to do is argue with me and prove I’m wrong. I tell him now only that I work all the time, because I don’t want to hear his shit and him trying to create new stories always to one up me.

My warning to all normal guys who travel and seek happiness with women: keep your life secret from anyone who is not a traveler and pursuing the same interests as you. I now only have friends that share these interests. I do not tell people who don’t travel about my life. Yes, we are truly living in adverse times in the West.

Re: Why do American men brag (exaggerate/lie)
My asshole "friend" used to use a friend of his as an example of how easy it was to laid in America. This guy who he said he "knew" was getting laid was 32 years old, lived with his parents, afraid of germs, had an imaginary girl friend who nobody ever saw in person or a picture of. I told my asshole "friend" this guy was a virgin and he kept telling me this guy would never lie to him. What do you think virgin or stud?Ghost wrote: Back when I was still a virgin, I would tell male friends about it if I trusted them enough. Of course, I never met another male virgin aside from the internet, the only place where you can go admit that and be secure in revealing it. I felt like it kept me out of the "club." And I was certain that some of my friends were virgins too, but would never admit it.
There are many virgins in America today!

Re: Why do American men brag (exaggerate/lie)
World Traveler, I am also in the same position. I spend 4 months overseas (3 of those months in the Philippines) each year. The more I spend overseas the less and less I have in common with my American friends who I grew up with. My best friend in High School (a friend for over 20 years) knocked up his high school sweet heart and never went to college. He has gone on to be a typical American capitalist entrepreneur as a hustling unethical used car salesman (been jailed and has had numerous lawsuits due to unethical practices). He is about a half a million in debt from from loans, mortgages and other outrageous spending habits mostly used to inflate his ego and appeal to women. He has a huge competitive ego and he hates nothing more than to see my party pics from AC Philippines of me surrounded by hot young women. He keeps telling me that I shouldnt have to go overseas to get p***y and that a real man could easily get p***y here (typical shame tactics). Even though he is a good looking guy all of his one night stands come from 40 year old single mothers (one which he married). As a typical American male, he also believes the myth that we males have a biological clock and we should settle down and marry now before we lose out on the dating market (lmao, this would never happen in the Philippines. A man's value only increases with age there). I try to tell him otherwise but like you mention there is no point. Feminism and American media propaganda already have their minds made up and nothing else will change that. I also have to avoid telling him about my experiences with women overseas as to not offend him or get him emotionally unraveled. I have noticed with many American men that you do have to watch what you say because they are very sensitive or are an inch away from exploding emotionally (or going on a shooting rampage). What kind of a society do we live in where people actually hate you for being happy and successful in life?
Very dysfunctional.

Re: Why do American men brag (exaggerate/lie)
I was gonna start a thread like this too, but it was gonna be about why white American guys always exaggerate and inflate numbers in every way - costs, expenses, income, accomplishments, etc - because I'm so sick and tired of 90+ percent of them doing that. Even white guys who are my friends here do that. Some examples:
1. Rock told me that the average salary in Taiwan is 100,000 NT a month, which everyone in Taiwan knows is not true. But Rock enjoyed inflating numbers because white guys LOVE to inflate numbers and add zeros to every number in their lives, whether it's cost or income or scores. I don't know why, but most white guys I know do that. They love to magnify numbers and exaggerate them. I would say that at least 80 or 90 percent of white guys I've met do that. Must be in their blood or DNA. Very weird. Must be a "white guy" thing.
However, every Taiwanese person I asked said that the average salary in Taiwan is between 25,000 and 35,000 NT, which is much less than Rock claimed. And when I used Google, most websites, including Forbes.com and WorldSalaries.org and ChinaSmack, gave similar numbers for Taiwan's average salary. Rock only found one dubious site at SalaryExplorer.com to support his claim. But for some reason, Rock needed to exaggerate that, perhaps to make me feel small because he has an elitist mindset. But the two Taiwanese women I asked about this were more believable and credible than Rock on this because:
1) Taiwanese women do not have a pattern of using big numbers to try to make me feel small or psychologically bully me. On the other hand, white men and Rock too, do have a pattern of doing that.
2) Taiwanese women do not have a tendency to inflate numbers. It's not their pattern at all. But white men do, which I've experienced MANY MANY times, more than I can count. Even Rock does it occasionally, even though he is mostly credible.
2. Next example: Sean, our friend behind LovePrivateEye.com and known in the forum as username "air_king", told me and Rock that he spent $50,000 USD setting up his tiny little Mei Mei bubble tea food stall in Angeles City. Rock gave him the benefit of the doubt, even though it's obviously bullshit, because he sympathizes with white guys who inflate numbers and exaggerate, since he does it himself sometimes.
If it costs $50,000 USD to set up a tiny little food stall business in the Philippines, a country where the average wage is $7 a day, then no one would set up a business there. Common sense. Come on now. Duh. That figure is totally implausible.
Sean claimed he had to pay bribes and import lots of supplies from Taiwan to set up his bubble tea shop. However, that still does NOT equal anywhere near 50k. Think about it. Filipinos told me that to open a small business in Philippines, even just a food stall, costs about $1,000 to start up. Then you add the supplies, rent of the stall, licensing fees, etc. Now, if Sean had to pay bribes, they would be about a few hundred dollars. Maybe even a thousand dollars. Bribes in the Philippines are nowhere near what he claims. And his supplies consist of sugar and flavoring powder or syrup used to make bubble tea, along with plastic cups and blender machines. Come on now. That doesn't cost much to buy or ship. Get real man.
At most, all of that should cost UNDER $3,000 USD. But not anywhere near $50,000. So his numbers are off by $47,000 USD. I can't believe that Rock would fall for that and think it's plausible. WTF is Rock smoking? It seems that because Rock is a white guy who LOVES to hype and inflate numbers, cause it's in his blood, that he sympathizes with other white guys who do that too and so gives them the benefit of the doubt. Seeing hyped numbers somehow titillates and arouses Rock. LOL
Now, I don't know why a white guy would inflate his expenses. After all, I get pride out of saying that I spent LESS, not more, and in talking about how much money I saved. So I don't know why white guys would brag about how much they spent and want to inflate that. It's not logical or rational at all. So I don't know. I guess white guys are friggin WEIRD. I can't explain it. But most white guys do that for sure. I don't know why. No offense to anyone here. Just calling a spade a spade.
Moreover, here's the KICKER: Sean and his girlfriend who ran the bubble tea stand with him told me that he was only paying his employee 150p a day to run the place, which is about $3 or $4 dollars a day!!!!!!!! NO FRIGGIN WAY MAN!!!!!!!!! That's not even the minimum wage which is 300p or 7 dollars!!!!!!! It's about HALF the minimum wage in the Philippines!!!!!!!! WTF man???????
Think about it everyone. If a man invested $50,000 to start up a little business, would he then hire workers at 3 dollars a day to run it, thus getting the lowest quality workers who constantly quit after payday and then have to rehire and retrain new workers all the time? LOL. Yeah right. What a joke!
THINK about it. If you were smart enough to have saved up a big sum like 50,000 dollars to invest in a business (which most western guys don't even have in capital), then how could you be dumb enough to only hire workers to run it at 3 dollars a day (which is HALF the minimum wage in the Philippines) and get the shittiest workers who constantly quit because they get paid so little? That's gotta be the dumbest and most implausible thing I ever heard. No one would shoot themselves in the foot like that or self-sabotage their own business like that! Get real.
Yet Rock never applied critical thinking to such a simple thing, because he LOVES to inflate numbers and he loves people who do that too, so he wants to believe them, because BIG NUMBERS titillate and arouse guys like Rock. LOL It's in his blood it seems. LOL
I could not understand why Sean would only pay his workers 3 bucks a day, which was far less than minimum wage. Sheesh. He must be the most stingy guy on the planet. He would make Scrooge from "A Christmas Carol" look generous. LOL. It's also common sense that if you pay that low, you will only get the lowest quality workers, or nothing at all. And that's exactly what happened! Sean had trouble finding workers who would work all day for 3 dollars a day (150p). He complained that no one wanted to work for him cause they were all lazy. Yet he could not see the obvious folly of his ways. And when he found a few workers, they would all quit after a week or so.
I tried to explain this to Sean recently, but he lost his temper on me and called me abusive, just because I told him the obvious truth which any sane person of basic intelligence could see. Apparently, he sucks at logic and hates the truth, even when it's obvious. Very weird. But then again, Angeles City and the Philippines attracts a lot of weird guys who don't make any sense.
Sean eventually lost his bubble tea business though, several years ago, when his girlfriend betrayed him (or so he claims) by filing false abuse charges on him which forced him to close up his bubble tea shop and leave the country for a while. He also claimed that Philippines officials were trying to make him pay more bribes because he was a foreigner. However, I've met his girlfriend at the bubble tea stall many times, and she seemed very nice, sincere, and down-to-earth, like a good person, possibly even a gem. She was very humble too. I can't imagine that she would file false abuse charges against him. But I don't know how truthful his claims are either. It's a case of his word against hers.
However, Sean has recently reopened his Taiwanese bubble tea shop again in the Philippines, but this time in another town called Batangas. Here is his website and Facebook fan page about his new Mei Mei Bubble Tea location:
http://www.meimeibubbletea.com
https://www.facebook.com/MeiMeiBubbleTea
Sean's facebook fan page above has some photos of his new stall and of himself, which you can see here:

What do you think? Do you think he spent another $50,000 USD to open his bubble tea stall again? LOL. Right.
Hope he does better this time though.
3. Also don't forget our buddy Steve R ("innovatorsclub" in the forum), who claimed to make $700,000 USD in the stock market but then lost it all. Even Rock didn't believe his claims, but he's another white guy who claims to have slept with tons of Thai girls without ever paying.
If I were a typical white guy, I would tell you all something like this:
"I bagged tons of girls in Russia. I must have slept with about 100 girls in Russia, and NONE of them were prostitutes!"
Almost all white guys say that. But I'm too honest. That's the problem. If I lied more, like most white guys do, I might be more successful in this website. But honesty is my fault. I don't think that most white guys do as well as they claim. Or that they do better than me by much. Girls are NOT easy to get into bed.
No offense to white guys in general. But that's my experience. Over 90 percent of them I've met will exaggerate every number in their life, not just income or scores, but also their expenses. I don't know why they always do that, but they do. The vast majority of them do at least.

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Ministry of Labor (MOL) yesterday released a survey on starting salaries in various industries, indicating that the average starting monthly salary for graduates fresh out of school stood at NT$25,175 last year, a NT$139 increase from the 2012 average.
The survey indicates that the average starting salary in the financial industry was the highest among all sectors in 2013, coming in at NT$29,768, followed by the electricity and gas supply industry, which recorded an average of NT$28,982 last year.
Of the different sectors, starting salaries in the service industry came in relatively low, with figures ranging from NT$22,000 to NT$23,000.
In the financial industry, starting salaries for people with master's degrees stood at NT$35,046, whereas starting salaries for people with the same level of education in the electricity and gas supply industry stood slightly higher at MT$35,055.
Average Salaries
Official data shows that the average salary on a nationwide basis stood at NT$37,771 last year, representing a NT$334 increase from 2012, while the average salary in Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) came in at a whopping NT$66,740, topping salaries offered by other companies across several industries. Taipower's high average salary was followed by the financial industry and the information and communications technology industry in the same year.
Meanwhile, sectors such as the educational services industry and the food and beverage industry came in at the bottom.
Most of the lowest salaries were concentrated in the service industry, with the lowest being cram schools, including those that teach languages and arts, with NT$21,979. The second lowest was the hospitality, food and beverage industry, which recorded an average of NT$27,345. The sector comprising businesses such as car washes, dry cleaners and funeral parlors, on the other hand, recorded NT$29,046.
The MOL said that in addition to differences in average salaries across different sectors, substantial differences also existed between low-level employees and executives within the same sector. For example, people in a managerial position can earn up to NT$62,000 a month, which is 1.66 times the average salary. Low-level employees, on the other hand, earn NT$24,000, which is 0.64 times the average salary.
According to the ministry, an employee's salary is on the whole dependent on his or her professional skills.
