So this female flight attendant who worked for American airlines started ranting like a crazy bitch on the PA system. It's interesting how you never hear about these types of meltdowns from asian airline staff. I know because of various PC/feminist laws that female flight attendants are kept way way past their expiration date on U.S. airlines. In the past when i've flown on U.S. airlines the attendants have always been below average in looks and a solid D- in attitude.

Lol, typical American female. But I have to say, I do have some sympathy for your average American flight attendant because of how crappy their work environment is--having to deal with obnoxious Americans everyday--and their low pay and benefits. I made a thread a couple months back comparing some American airlines with their foreign competition. Almost, universally, everyone preferred traveling foreign rather than domestic--which was not surprising, to say the least.
I also made a thread about the T.V. show Pan Am, which dramatized what traveling was like during the glamor era of flying during the 50s and 60s. Today, the only way for passengers to feel as they did back then is take a flight with a handful of foreign airlines (Singapore, Asiana, Etihad, Emriates, Cathay Pacific, Qatar, etc), which no U.S. airline can even come close to...

I second that emotion. Did you know that 40 years ago they actually had body weight limits for the stewardesses? Now it's like that Twilight Zone Episode "Terror at 30,000 Feet".Repatriate wrote:I know because of various PC/feminist laws that female flight attendants are kept way way past their expiration date on U.S. airlines. I will never forget one time I tried to help this blond flight attendant lift a suitcase into the overhead cabin and she barked at me; "I got it!" I never been so embarrassed to try and help a woman and from that point I said never again.Repatriate wrote:So this female flight attendant who worked for American airlines started ranting like a crazy bitch on the PA system. I regret not reporting her. She was just a bimbo barely able to do her job and most of flight when she was not working I remember her flirting with the pilots.
1. What do you mean by travelling foreign vs. domestic? Do you mean travelling on non-US carriers or flying from one country to another. I've noticed that domestic flights in many countries are much more non-frills than same airline flights which depart from one country and arrive in another.zboy1 wrote:Lol, typical American female. 2. For me, Southwest is by far the best US airline for attitude and service. And they carry more domestic passengers than any other US carrier. Although my expectations for US air travel are generally low, I often get positive surprises when I fly Southwest from friendly, upbeat, and outgoing employees, etc. And I love their scheduling flexibility, free baggage allowance, and use of smaller airports for some cities.
3. Inflation adjusted prices for US air travel have dropped dramatically since deregulation in late 70s, perhaps by as much as 50%. Total packages for pilots and flight attendants have suffered a similar fall. If you consider how much oil prices have risen since that era, especially in first decade of 2000, its likely that total inflation adjusted profits for the American passenger airline industry have fallen by over 90%. Given these economics, its not surprising that the image (and by and large the reality) of on-board airline jobs has gone from prestige and glamour to slave work.
I also think it has a lot to do with the passengers and the attitude toward flying in general. I am old enough to remember flying in the 60s, when it was a special experience. You didn't think of getting on the aircraft and bitching about your seat or whatever. For hot women, a flight attendant job was an important position with great perks.
Today I watch passengers bitch to flight attendants, who in most cases listen and handle the situation well. But it's no longer a glamorous job attracting hot women.
So it's a trade off: cheaper air fares but poor service and nasty passengers and flight attendants.
