Miami Vice - 1984

It was bad at the time. Far too pretentious and corny to bear, for adults at least. But 35 years later it gives you glimpses of a better era if you can ignore the silly characters. What was unwatchable trash then becomes a watchable and even enjoyable alternative now. Is that a good summary? Are we in agreement that this show was always really overrated?

The "In the Air Tonight" Scene is arguably the most memorable and famous scene from the Miami Vice television series, and is regularly cited as one of the greatest, most influential moments in the history of television. Original air date September 16, 1984

This show is universally iconic for its use of Phil Collins's "In The Air Tonight" in its pilot episode "Brother's Keeper" (Season 01 Episode 01). But what most people don't know is that the song is used for a second time in the series... In this episode, in this scene. And in my opinion, *THIS* is the defining / iconic use of the song... Not the pseudo-romantic fragment-poem bullshit they tried to pull off in the first episode, which caught on for some reason (I guess people really love shots of cars driving at night in a neon-glowing city...)

Agree with all your points. Pretentious is the word I would have used when it first came out, an episode I remember well. Pretentious and maybe the word I want is over-stylized. Now just an echo of times so much better than the current social dissolution.

A young J-school grad and I were beginning our journalism careers together at the time in a second, maybe third tier Texas city. I was older and he was eager to learn whatever I knew about politics and policy. Six years later he came to visit me in the D.C. area, landed a job there and now is a well-known corporate journalism professional liar and useful idiot. You'd know the name if you have any familiarity with network news. In 1984 he was interested in truth, now he knows full well he can't go anywhere near it without losing everything.
