The modern day Jews are just a small portion of the Israelites of the Bible, that's if these modern Jews are actually their descendants.

Nine to 10 of the 12 Israelite tribes were mixed back into the general population of the area and became Samaritans. The remaining tribe that was left was Juda, from which the term Jew is taken. So most of the Israelites have been lost, with only the Jews remaining (that's if today's Jews are the same people of the Biblical times). The other remaining tribes were Benjamin and some Levite priests among the tribe of Judah (and maybe some of the tribe of Simeon and whoever moved from Israel down into Judah before they were taken into captivity or admixed with the Assyrians and others).

As for their Biblical accuracy, modern Judaism admits that it is of the Pharisees, which is not true to the Old Testament at all but is the tradition of the rabbis and elders, who basically made up their own commandments that they held above the Bible/ Old Testament / Books of Moses. So in practice they are not actually Jews, because a Jew is supposed to follow the Bible, not the tradition of men. Neither do they believe in Jesus, who is also the LORD of the Old Testament, although they didn't know Him by name in the ancient days.

Apparently Ashkenazi are genetically similar to Sephardic Jews, so I'm not sure where they all originate, but there is a definite genetic connection.

I researched this like 20 years ago and forgot alot, it is a fascinating topic for sure. I know in Israel the Ashkenazi is top dog and Shlomo Sand is a Ash and he says or believes they are imposters. Sephardic is for Spain correct ?

The only thing I have come across is that Sephardic Jews sometimes fled to North Africa then went to Europe and the Americas. I have never seen any historical account of Sephardim fleeing to the Middle East (other than to Israel).
