@Winston I agree with you that everyone is greedy and dishonest. A while ago I had a refrigerator repairman come to fix our fridge. I think it was something minor but he pretended to work on it a long time so that he could get his full repair fee. I think he charged $250+. He kept repeating it would cost me $1000 for a new fridge so he was saving me money. It was probably some minor thing. But he had me.

I think next time I will just buy a new fridge with a warranty to avoid these unscrupulous repairmen.

Winston, be thankful that your house in Las Vegas is at least structurally sound. So many developments built in the last 20 years have so many issues...except the high-end homes, of course.

But in our group @GoingAwol said that one of the things he likes about America is that you can rest assured that people are honest in business and don't cheat each other. That's true in general I guess, like in mom and pop stores. He lives in TN too. Compared to SE Asia I guess that's true, however when Americans do scam you, they go for thousands of dollars, not just a few extra dollars like those in SE Asia do.

Has anyone in TN ever tried to scam you?
You didn't answer my question. You keep posting with these movies that you watch and think that's what life is supposed to be like. So can you now answer the question. Are you living in a fantasy world in your mind. That's the question. Answer.
Yes maybe I am. But that is because I believe the world should be a lot better than this, and I do not accept or understand it. This world is not my world, sorry. It makes no sense. I don't relate to it. Just being honest. Why do you ask? Why should I accept something I don't like?

My dad thinks this thread should not have been created btw. Because his Buddhist philosophy is to forgive and let go, and not to seek revenge against others, not even scammers. lol

Well we have home insurance. Does that cover it? Doesn't home insurance only cover acts of God or weather damage or arson? It doesn't cover a building collapsing due to structural failure due to bad design? Do houses ever just break down for no reason? I'm not saying this house is built of quality material. It's the usual material in Vegas suburban neighborhoods that is all over the Vegas suburbs. Very standard. I don't know if this neighborhood is high end. It's just standard, not ghetto of course.

Any of you have any experiences with HVAC repairmen? If so, what was it like? How do you find honest repairmen? It seems every company in America wants to overchrage nowadays. Very sad. In Asia, this kind of thing costs around $30 total or less, to call a repairman to come fix something in your house, most of the time that is.
Winston, the TIMING of this post just seems insane. My HVAC system died on me during the sweltering heat of a Tennessee summer this year back in August. Lost my A/C, and with it part of my sanity lol. I found a local company in my area which showed online as having been in business for a long time with glowing positive reviews from customers, so I decided to go with them. The tech came out, inspected the HVAC, and found the problem using all his gadgets.

He was courteous and professional enough, but when he had to tell me what the problem was (a Freon leak in the Evaporator Coil, so the coil needs replacing), and quote me how much it would be to repair the unit, I could hear the tone in his voice change to being very reluctant and unhappy when he had to tell me the amount. I was expecting maybe a $500 to $1,000 bill which I would've been okay with. What was his quote? $3,600!!! I was like f**k THAT NOISE! It was either that, or replace the whole damn HVAC system for $12K - $14K depending on the manufacturer I'd choose!

I could not understand for the life of me how a part in an HVAC could cost THAT much which included the labor. I thought while he was here that I knew of a much cheaper alternative to fixing my A/C problem in the house. I told him I'm a hold off on repairing the HVAC for now, and just go to Wallyworld to pick up a window A/C unit for like $150, and a portable unit for my master bedroom for around $360. That method worked much better as I got my A/C back in the areas of the house where I spend the most time. Encountering no resistance from him, I paid the tech the $100 service call fee, and sent him on his way. Didn't contact them again.

After researching how much it's SUPPOSED to cost for that kind of repair, I found this site which showed me amounts not even CLOSE to what that dude quoted me even on the high-end for complex HVAC systems.

Seriously, these people SUCK. Now, when I do decide to repair it, I need to call around to find a company who will do the job, and not try to finesse me.  :x :x

Thanks for the post. And me and tons of other people have been "finessed" by businesses with bad intentions. Always be skeptical to protect yourself. And yes just like Winston said, as a rule of thumb, the truth about something should be short and to the point. No mechanic or salesman or business person should have to overly persuade you with tons of technical jargon.

Buddhism is basically Jaime escalante in the movie "stand and deliver". In contrast Christianity is about rules and hierarchy.

As of greed, um, it reminds me of Paul allen, apparently his mind still remembers a time before he dropped out of wsu even though he had billions at the time of his death. Look for people like him.
Then again, some people go all the way (cognitive dissonance/fallacy of incomplete evidence).

Eat dates.

The problem is iphones.
