...solar system, not galaxy.

It's a "short" flight to the Moon, but distance from Earth to Mars varies from 55 million km to 400 million km depending on the orbital position. If you were to time the return trip at shortest distance, it't take you about 22 months to get to Mars, where you stay for 4 months, then another 9 months for the trip back. That's a 3-year mission. The Russians are hosting a 520-day mock Mars mission this year, in which China is taking part:

Russia to launch 520-day mock mission to Mars
INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION

June 02, 2010|By Derrick Ho, Special to CNN

In an attempt to re-create the experience of a manned mission to Mars, an international team of researchers will lock themselves up in a windowless capsule for about a year and a half -- time required for a round trip to the Red Planet.

Starting Thursday, an all-male "crew" of six -- three Russians, a Frenchman, an Italian-Colombian and a Chinese -- will spend 520 days in the cramped and claustrophobic conditions of a special facility in Moscow and will follow a strict regimen of exercise and diet.

Our Mikly Wave Galaxy is estimated at 100,000 light years across and hosts 100-400 billion stars. With our current technology it's difficult to even colonize Mars. It'd be quite some time before we make our way outside of our solar system (other than unmanned probes like Voyager 1 and 2).
