The "warrior gene" is a colloquial term for a variation in the gene known as MAOA (Monoamine oxidase A). The MAOA gene provides instructions for making an enzyme that breaks down several neurotransmitters, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. The variant of the gene that has been referred to as the "warrior gene" is associated with lower levels of MAOA activity and has been linked to aggressive behavior in some studies.

Research has suggested that individuals who carry the variant MAOA gene and who have experienced adverse environmental factors such as childhood maltreatment, abuse, or neglect may be at an increased risk for developing aggressive and impulsive behaviors.
