Thoughts on why they don't make such films today? For example, the Japanese erotic film industry died because of home-video and straight up porn. It was more private and in the home video market producers could create smaller budget projects that cater to different niches. Erotic feature films for theatrical release just couldn't compete with this.

In the USA, you now have a lot of stuff on cable TV that features nudity and sex. TV shows like Spartacus, banshee, Rome, Marco Polo, Californication and many others probably serve the niche that used to be covered by erotic theatrical films.
