If video gets taken down, search: Charlie Brooker How TV Ruined Your Life (BBC2, Season 1)

Season 1 Episode 4 (part 1/2) ^

If you're bored then go on youtube and search Charlie Brooker, he's got a lot of gems from his past BBC4 shows Screenwipe and Newswipe.

Here is the episode about how unreal fantasy images of relationships are, vs. relationships in real life. It's so funny.

And the one about how TV has given us unrealistic aspirations and a sense of entitlement.

it's not supposed to be funny. it's deeply sad because it's all true. imagine how fast the world would change if everyone just smashed their tvs. crime and violence was almost non-existent before the invention of tv.

What Chomsky said about professional sports makes sense. It serves no practical purpose other than to promote group cohesion and allegiance to authority. It's nothing but mind control. Anyone who doesn't believe in conspiracies should look at professional sports because it is so obviously a mind control tool that no intelligent person can deny it.

I think Brooker is very funny and incisive. I just want to point out that his videos linked to above are only about half the proper length - should be 29 minutes each. Those can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjF932SF ... re=related

Perhaps it does "promote group cohesion and allegiance to authority" in some ways. But just because something may benefit an elite group, doesn't necessarily mean it was designed so it would. People are attracted to sport because of the simplistic nature of it, which is rare in such an artificial world. That is where the passion comes from, a subconscious yearning to get back to what's natural and real. The opposite reason you're suggesting, that people are brain-washed into liking it. Sport also helps people to connect to each-other through having similar interests, which may be somewhat shallow, but it's better than them not being connected at all.

Unlike everything else shown on television, there is nothing in professional sport that promotes moral impurity. Except perhaps the way some players behave at times, but that is highly condemned. Unlike in everything else on the TV where the f***ed up and shallow things characters do is the purpose and entertainment of the show.

Just my take. Sport is a love it or hate it type of thing, so neither side can give an unbiased perspective. Just like when whore mongers want to defend what they do as natural, and romantic types want to condemn it as corrupted. Feel free to disagree.

OMG! I am 5 minutes in to episode 1 of that season about fear on TV and I'm hooked. I LOVE British humor. I'm already laughing out loud on some of the images portrayed and comments made.

(must be why Ricky Gervais and Top Gear are some of my favorite things.)

Edit - Hahaha. Steve Guttenburg saved the world. Thanks Steve Guttenburg. ROFL. I love this so far.

Edit 2 - Oh God!! The Porno reading of Black Box recordings!! This special has everything.

The bit in episode 3 about helicopter parenting (not a phrase he used, but it is what he was referring to) was spot on. Parents too afraid of danger to let their children be children.

Haha ok I was rolling when they played the "home decorating" video of the couple's new cardboard house, but I nearly spit when they demonstrated how that new cardboard house could be converted into a matching pair of coffins when they die.
