Which free antivirus program is best?

Post by Winston »

Do you use a free antivirus program? If so, which one do you think is best? Here is a list I found:

I didn't know there was a Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus program now.

Avira and Avast seem to have top reviews. Should I uninstall my AVG and use one of those?

There is no single "best" free antivirus application. Microsoft security essentials is free and good enough for most users. If you want something more professional, try Kaspersky ($$).

I find that free Malawarebytes catches a lot of stuff that my Norton does not.

I'm using Avira now and so far it has caught a lot of viruses that AVG did not. And it has more features though. I'd definitely recommend it. You can download it for free here:

Yeah but Malware Bytes has no shield or scanner running in the background unless you update to the pro version. The free version is great though and good for scanning your computer.

I used to use AVG Free but it now sucks and constantly corrupts and has to be reinstalled. It also misses a lot of viruses. I switched to Avira long ago, and also found that Avast is good as well. They are both free. If you have neither, I would go with Avast for now, since the control panel seems more user friendly and even has a female voice giving you notifications.

I use Avast nowadays after years of using AVG which was the best, but feel it is too slow and uses too much memory.
