Should Martial Arts be banned?

Post by Mr. Mistoffelees »

Hewwo y'all (≧∇≦)/

I was thinking today about whether martial arts are actually a good idea. I've seen some of y'all talking about martial arts and I wanted to share some reflections with y'all about what I think about the "sport" ┗(・ω・;)┛

C'mon y'all, let's be brutally honest here. Martial arts and combat sports like the UFC are just glorified violence. People who practice and actively seek out such a violent outlet are just as bad barbaric thugs who terrorize the streets. The only difference between a "martial artist" and a soccer hooligan is that "martial artists" are given deadly knowledge on how to enact their violent tendencies with potentially deadly efficiency.

Take the Bumfights video series produced by Indecline Films. A bunch of A-hole college students made videos and paid some bums to have physical fights on camera for money. The whole thing was barbaric and appalling.

UFC is just the same. But instead of bums we have paid professionals who brutally assault each other on camera for the entertainment of thousands of spectators across the globe. This is just a commercialized version of Bumfights, which the same fans of UFC would likely hypocritically condemn.

Theatre and other arts are a much more constructive outlet. Martial arts just turns thugs who crave violence more deadly at what they do. If you approve of martial arts and the UFC then you're no different to the degenerate scum who find Bumfights amusing.

Totes disgusting 😑

Anyhooooooo I am curious to see what my articulate friends of Happierabroad.com think to this reflection 😔

Well if we would live in year 2100 and all violence problems hat been solved I might consider it. Rationally I don't like watching UFC in general but my animal side loves that shit. Sometimes I twitch and acting the moves reflexively. Anyway even if I could control myself not watching it I would like to learn a bit of the techniques for self defence. Additionally one wants to be prepared a bit for violence. Watching that prepares a bit I think.

Anyway I can rationalize watching it because I really learnt a lot of stuff.

When I was a kid it was a lot of fun wrestling with my friends. I miss that a bit.

No, martial arts shouldn't be banned. Martial arts provide a structured outlet for violent impulses to be channeled in a constructive manner, cultivate discipline and mental fortitude, develop the body, and teach valuable combat skills that can be used for self-defense.

I've been practicing martial arts for a long time. I began with Brazilian Jiujitsu but then also added wrestling, Muay Thai and general MMA training. Martial arts definitely improved my life a lot. They got me into peak physical fitness, increased my confidence, allowed me to overcome depression at the low points of my life and gave me a sense of achievement. Martial arts are a perfect avenue for somebody with a warrior disposition like myself.

I love watching UFC. What might look like mindless barbarism to an uninformed onlooker is actually a beautiful artform with the highest levels of technique and strategy being showcased to an audience. It shouldn't be compared to "Bumfights" or random acts of hooliganism.

If such contests aren't your thing then you can simply change the channel, but don't go about trying to ban age-old traditions and combat sports that elevate the lives of millions of serious and responsible practitioners and bring joy to countless more fans.

Maybe I can try an alternative for my bloodlust with female show wrestling. Men wrestling is a bit gay anyway.
It's a great camera angle

Wow! Titties!

Hey galii, were you a WCW fan back in the day? I used to watch WWF from about 2000 but never saw much WCW except the occasional match here and there and long after the company folded. Women's wrestling was like softcore porn back then and I used to love it! :D

Nowadays I mostly just watch the main UFC PPVs whenever they're on. WWE just became too ghey for me though.

I am a bit older. In my time it was called WWW. I can't remember the girls at the time. Maybe they were not there so much at my time.

I don't watch PPV but I watch UFC for shure. I don't want to be a fan but maybe I am. I learned quite a bit theoretical BJJ. I did some few solo drills. I think a training dummy could be fun. In order not to look gay I then need a hot girl doll.

I don't watch much show wrestling but I do respect their skills. They are skilled athletes and actors.

Hewwo ☺️

I know you are making fun out of me here, so let me take the bait regardless and share my truthful point of view.

I do find it distasteful. And the sight of blood really makes my butt squeaky... (ノ_<。)

I won't get into a discussion about what does and what doesn't "get my juices flowing" as you so eloquently put it. (;⌣̀_⌣́) that isn't what this discussion was intended to be about.

But MMA can be directly likened to the bumfights I mentioned. Σ(-᷅_-᷄ ๑) it's pretty much the same thing, which is people beating the hell outta each other for money. These professional athlete are busting each other up, leaving the octagon all swollen and bleeding. There's blood all over the floor, Lucas! Where is the culture or discipline in that? (ಥ﹏ಥ)

It's just giving bloodthirsty barbaric thugs license to be violent and barbaric to a much larger audience of bloodthirsty spectators at home. It's a slightly more civilized version of the Roman gladiatorial games where people were slaughtered mercilessly for the entertainment of bloodthirsty spectators. It's no different... O.o

The arts offer true discipline and culture. The masterpieces of theatre which I regard as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.

Life often imitates art, so I beseech you, dear Lucas! Which should we aspire towards? Which is the greater form of discipline and culture between theatre and barbarism?

NO! And I say that also for similar reasons why I believe the US shouldn't ban firearms.
