This is very true. It is a big difference between a young backpacker walking around from island to island or an older Western man who is living for a longer time in Philippines renting a house. Such a foreign man is clearly at the risk to become a target of robbery, burglary, even kidnapping.

I can only advice foreign men considering retirement in Philippines to do what rich Filipinos are doing all the time.

Rent or buy property in a guarded community or condominium building, avoid to be out in the streets past 10 PM to 6 AM, never carry any valuables with you like expensive watches, keep in your wallet only the minimum of cash, otherwise use ATM cards etc.
It's about common sense, some Western cities are also dangerous. It's not only about Philippines.

Good advice, but how affordable is this, for the middle-class western man?
Is it possible, or you should be rich, to have such choices?

It depends how much you want to spend for your new home, if you want to buy or rent etc.

You can buy in your own name a studio, about 30 m2 in a newly constructed guarded high-rise condominium building for about USD 70.000,- in Cebu.
For example: ... -110552278

The money you had to use for the deposit for the resident permit can be used for buying such a property.

Philippine Government regulations are easy to understand and all is in English.

If you have some savings and some income like a retirement allowance it might be a good idea to relocate to Cebu.

Real estate in Philippines, Cebu is more expensive compared to Thailand, Pattaya, but long-stay visa formalities are easy and they include working permit.

In Thailand retirement visa requires a deposit of about USD 22.000,-, and permits for long stay for young people is often a problem. It is safer in Thailand compared to Philippines.

Everybody has different needs, I personally prefer my permanent residence in Japan.
