Ukraine on Tourist Map ( Finally)

Post by ladislav » November 18th, 2008, 10:20 pm

People who are from Ukraine have a problem telling people where they come from as the country is not very well known. It is always either "Where is that?" Or "Oh, Russia!" as a response. Both phrases are big shame, and pretty much insults to anyone from there as even those are not ethnically Ukrainian, still think of it as a homeland that they love. Think how much it hurts the full blooded locals.

Well, things are changing. The visa free policy is in effect and tourists can now just walk in ( provided they are 1st-worlders) . People are pouring in.

The "Where is that" or "Oh , Russia?" bs is also changing. Believe it or not, I think I have been able to help with that. I have been writing for several years to appropriate authorities there asking them to put a CNN commercial about Ukraine. They have assured me that they are working on several ,but I never thought that they would actually go on CNN and promote. Well, lo and behold here we go:

This is super cool:

And it has been on CNN since Nov 12 now.

Now, this has been running on other networks, too:

Hopefully things will be improving although I have met only 1-2 Filipinos who knew where the place was or what it was. They do not watch the CNN, I guess.

It seems that the government is still pissed because not enough tourists are coming so it has set up an organization called Ukraine Cognita and it is making all these commercials to attract tourists. Anyway, here they are:

I was born in this city, btw:

I like this Seinfeld moment featuring Ukraine...

"The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane." Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor and stoic philosopher, 121-180 A.D.

Seinfeld put some hickish man on the train, not a cute girl or something.

Media does not usually report anything good so if a country does not advertise itself no one will. Unless it is something bad.

Here is a very good one:

Amazing what a bit of montage and music can do. It is all in the packaging.
