I've come across a lot of threads on various forums where young men ask what careers they should go into. For some reason the advice they are given is invariably stupid.
Specific stupid advice is usually given to the effect that they should go into some esoteric area of science or engineering currently in demand requiring a graduate degree. The advice is postdictive - telling them what would have been a good idea to get into ten years ago. In a fast moving (and fast collapsing) globalized economy such small niches don't stay understaffed for long, so following the advice would virtually guarantee the young men unemployment at the end of their education. And that is even if the economy doesn't completely collapse before then, which it will.
General stupid advice usually given is that they should find a productive, useful skill that helps people. Of course it would be a good idea to have skills likely to enable you to survive the coming meltdown, but surely in terms of a career there is ample evidence that trying to do anything useful is for chumps. For one thing only a very small percentage of jobs in Western economies produce anything of value. Most jobs are make-work projects and simply facilitate transfers of wealth, so trying to be productive will mean you are chasing a small and shrinking number of jobs. If you are only hired for being productive your employer will constantly be looking to replace you with more productive and/or less costly machines or foreign workers, whereas if you are hired for other reasons, say to meet a government quota, they won't be. Wages in the productive sector tend to be set by the economic value of the employee, which tends towards minimum wage over time, since even a slight surplus of available employees will create a work or starve situation. Wages in the non-productive sector are arbitrary, which in practice means they are higher these days. And so on.
I don't know why people insist of giving the coming generation stupid advice. Perhaps it is like being the victim of any other practical joke, where at first you are annoyed and then you start looking around for someone else to fool.

As someone who recently finished university I can't tell you how pissed off I was. After reading countless artifles like: the baby boomers are retiring, shortage of jobs everywhere etc etc I woke up one day and realized it's just bullshit.
Employers complain that they can't find specialized workforce but:
1. They're not willing to train new people like university graduates.
2. They expect you to work for crappy wages while elderly people in the company get paid 3-4 times as much and are usually less productive.
3. Vacation time is seen as some sort of bonus.
4. They prefer pushing their employees to the limit with overtime instead of hiring new people.
Also some majors are just useless: philosophy, psychology (full of skanks who become escorts), history, social sciences etc.
The only areas that work are accounting & finance, IT, architecture and to some degree engineering. Also, any health related career is a sure way to become successful if you have patience.

There are several jobs that don't require a 4 year degree, aren't expensive (Community College) and recession-proof.

As long as they continue to have taller and taller buildings, they always will need somebody to fix them when they break down.
Most companies hire a service, I used to work for a company that not only handled Elevators but general building maintenance, security and garage attendants.

Like djfouroney alluded to, there is a ton of money to be made on the internet. Why? Because there is a genuine need. Even if we keep going down the road of Japan or worse, people always want to improve. And so, if there is something you know about, or are good at, create a product! And a job in the process. And to be honest, that is where it seems like it is going. More and more towards craftsmanship, and less about "mega" corporations, and being drones that work for them.

I picked computers in general because I am always on one or watching one (HTPC). I always repaired them myself, now I am just certified (big deal) which helps in the job market (but does it?).
The internet is about the information age and people have always paid for information and continue to pay for it. Despite Google Search look how many people want the information spoon fed to them....
On one of Pat Flynn's interviews a entrepreneur mentioned you could teach a man to fish to feed himself for life but its likely you missed a business opportunity and he's right. Not everybody wants to learn how to fish, fix cars, fix electronics, find love, find sex, find travel advice, airline tickets, consolidate frequent flier miles, etc, etc, etc.
ebooks is one way to make money online by sharing information. That's how Pat Flynn got started. He had gotten his LEED certification, so he wrote a ebook that was basically a study guide for the cert test. He then monetized the web site with Google Adsense this is what Winston does on here.
Look at Pat's income reports on his site, he makes a majority of his money referring people to Blue Host to host your website or blog. He's well into the 5 digit range in earnings just off that.
Many of you who have expertise can put it online and either charge for a live webinar, HD cameras are cheap (relatively speaking).
One of my favorite You Tube content makers is Skky John. He's a SAG member but like most actors in Hollywood he is apart of the middle class, many who act part time (he was featured in a NFL Redzone Mobile advert last season) but work a standard full time job (he's a bartender).
He basically post videos about his sex/dating life. It then morphed into asking question to willing interviews about subjects guys would love to ask but were scared. Then he started making some of the drinks he makes at work for his channel. His channel would get flagged for cursing and near nudity so he got a 2nd channel Skky John2 to hold the racy content and the more PG13 content for his normal channel and then he finally split off the bartending/drink making into a channel Tipsy Bartender.
He makes money with Yahoo/Google because an advert runs before each video.
This has allowed him to keep his west LA apartment, buy a Canon D60 camera ($900+) for HD videos and still, hire a friend to do much of the cinematography and travel.
He's been to Thailand for New Years (2010), Germany, Sweden, Spain to run with the bulls (During World Cup 2008) and recently he took his British part-time model GF to the Caribbean.
I wouldn't say he's ballin but considering he works at a job he likes and gets some money from doing stuff he considered fun online. He's getting exposure to get national TV adverts which pay well.
That's just one or two examples of how to make money on the internet.
Have something worthwhile, get the word out (Google Backlinking, Facebook landing page, Blog, Podcast, Videocast, etc) and through Google Adsense you can easily pay your rent every month if you're willing to put the time in and invest a little bit.
You don't need Prosumer cameras to do HD video, the prices have dropped on DSLR's that can easily do HD 1080p video and you can get shotgun mics or lapel mics for HQ audio.
As I said there just needs to be more thinking outside the box, not inside it. Stop believin you need traditional work. Also learn how to budget properly (not taught in school really) and stay out of debt.
Most of the jobs in that link I provided well give you stable high income but you'll be stuck doing that job so you better like it. After 8-10 years on the job you'll get 4-6 weeks paid vacation.
I want options, so I have felt I have picked the best way to share information and earn a little bit of money, enough to survive anywhere I wanna be and to afford a wife and maybe a baby soon afterwards. we'll see how things go.
No reason to spend half a million on a nice home in a upper middle class area in America when I got get two homes in two different parts of the world for slightly less and pay roughly the same amount of taxes on both...
My dream is to live in the Southern Hemisphere in North's Winter and the Northern Hemisphere in the Southern's generally rainy Winter.
That's why I keep saying I have a plan and if I want a wife, she has to up, down and sideways agree with this plan or it won't work and I won't marry her, simple as that.
If she agrees it will be a life she would have never imagined on her own in some small modest apartment or house in FSU (or South America).

ESL teaching should also be included if one wants to travel and also make some pretty good money ( if you work in right countries and don't mind some rough culture shocks) and have long vacations. I have a buddy who is a lawyer and a chemist but who also got an MA in TESL and went to work in Saudi and then Oman and Iraq. Now he has $300K in the bank. Another buddy of mine also taught ESL in the UAE and was in six figures last time I worked with him.
ESL is not just working for pittance in Korea and China and teaching people " Mary had a little lamb". If you have an MA, there are military contracts in Saudi to teach English for special purposes- airforce English, Air supply English, etc- 60K a year tax free + apartment+ free food and transportation- no tax + 64 days vacations. A Dynacorp job in Iraq teaching ESL to Iraqi gov't in the Green Zone was $139K a year.
A saw a job for an ESL director in Singapore- 110K a year.
The American economy seems to be just circulating and regurgitating of the same money and borrowing and repeating the cycle and there is so much credit based stuff- it is both convenient and bad- sometimes I feel like I am sitting in a car with air conditioning just recycling the same air. An tax is attached to it like glue.
Once you plug into the Arab matrix of the countries of the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Peninsula plus Iraq- it will be soon safe to go there, and hopefully Lybia as wel, you will discover a spring of money gushing forth, and it is real money and it is un-taxed and all yours. Chunks of it. Plus all those looong vacations and just a cheap and relaxed lifestyle. And servants! Yes, siree! I hate cleaning my own house.
And you do not need to be super smart- just be a citizen of a country where English is a native language and have a degree from that country.
After you have lived in condos on the beach or villas with 6 rooms and ' rented' brand new cars for years and had servants, the US life will seem bleak in comparison.
Another thing not to ignore- this is not a lot of money but it will forever support you in cheaper countries- teaching English through Skype. There are many schools in Russia and China hiring. They do not pay much- 8-12 an hour mostly, but you will be able to live in Mexico and Colombia and the Philippines and live OK. $800-1200 a month is easy.
And if you speak and read another language then you can become an online translator. I have done English-Spanish and Russian- English translations and that pays the bills. There are thousands of translation agencies. A certified translator can make up to 100K a year and a non certified some 40-60K a year. Again, you need to bust your balls to find those jobs but I know one agency that will blast your resume to 16,000 agencies and that will land you work.
There is also IELTS preparation/training and you can get an IELTS examiner's license- you can make $200 + a day on average.
This is what I have been doing mostly and it has worked for me and I have traveled and saved money and dated 100s of gorgeous women- dream life based on a little known ESL degree.
And this is not a winner- loser field. There are just lots and lots of very mundane sounding teaching jobs but they allow you to save at least 20K a year. 5 years- 100K. Without having to sacrifice creature comforts.
Oh, btw, about dangers- where is that list of world's most dangerous cities? Muscat, Oman, Manama Bahrain, Doha Qatar and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia are not on the list.

Many people take (and recommend taking) NWO whore jobs, like the U.S. military, Blackwater, Dyncorp etc. I.e. overpaid whoring. I recommend looking into energy, mining, & resource extraction industries. This could be anything from oil rigs to land fill gas (LFG) extraction, plus supporting industries. MRO (Maintenance, Repair, Operations), Kanban (just-in-time) implementation, Contractor background check services, Project Management, Risk/Safety Management, Process Improvement (Lean, Six Sigma) consultants, etc. The list is quite large and you should do your own research.
