The_Adventurer wrote:I'm going to go against the grain and say that a pot belly has absolutely nothing to do with being fat or gaining/losing weight. You see those kids in Africa that are nothing but skin and bones yet have that huge pot belly sticking out like they are pregnant. Think about that one...
In their case, that's a disease called kwashiorkor. It comes from a diet extremely low in protein (even the average vegetarian diet is nowhere near low-protein enough to cause kwashiorkor--it only happens with an extreme lack of protein).
A pot belly of fat is different than kwashiorkor. A lot of people genetically tend to just store fat in their belly, which is an unhealthy place to store fat because having fat there is strongly associated with heart disease (whereas fat on your butt/thighs does not have a strong association with heart disease. But you can't choose where your body stores fat; it's genetic).
A pot belly is normally caused by eating too much food (especially but not always sugary, fatty things like apple pie, cakes, etc.), combined with the genetic predisposition to store fat there and a lack of enough exercise.
One of the worst things about having a pot belly is that when you try to bend down to cut your toe nails, your pot belly blocks you from bending down. Don't you hate that? Do any of you with a pot belly here have that problem too? lol

Overall the guy who created these vids is mostly correct. It's at odds with dominant US thinking to say this, but obesity is more a hormonal phenomenon than a caloric one. Many studies show calorie counting does not work.
There have been reports in the news these last couple of years about how Americans are getting fatter (no surprise) but that they're accumulating the fat in different places than before. Specifically, belly fat. Thinking back to when I was a kid, the overweight women of that era (and there were fewer of them) tended to accumulate fat on the thighs and bust, not the belly. The beer belly is far more common among the men of today than in the 80's and earlier. Cortisol is the culprit here, as the producer keeps saying. It spikes blood sugar. Elevated glucose levels leads to insulin resistance, meaning that blood sugar will be converted to belly fat rather than free energy.
Cortisol is a long-lasting stress hormone and it takes a while to reduce it. Sleep, adequate complex carbs, moderate exercise will help. It's normal to eat a fist-sized portion of rice, potatoes, pasta or bread with a meal.
You can look at photos of groups of people from the 1970's and earlier. Hardly anyone was fat like they are today. People of that era ate a full spectrum of foods, including bread, rice, potatoes, cheese, meat, vegetables, and LESS sugar than today. People are exercising more now than in the past. Gym participaton didn't start to rise until the 80's. Elevated activity due to constant work (such as housework, walking, manual labor, etc) promotes stable blood glucose and reduces fat. Three 20-minute spurts weekly in the gym, less so.
A couple other things:
1) He is a vegan. I've met many vegans over the years and it's RARE to meet a fat one (although I prefer to eat meat and dairy). Many studies confirm that vegan diets are helpful in weight loss. Someone who still likes animal products can reduce consumption by, say, 2/3 and still enjoy a lot of the benefit. Veganism would be a fast-acting solution if someone had the will power to do it.
2) The biggest complaint among people trying to lose weight is probably hunger. Fiber, water, fat and protein help a person have a full, satiated feeling. Any vegetable or fruit is fair game. Whole grains, brown rice and beans have lots of starch, and the beans have protein. So these things are good too. You can go to poor countries with lots of natural endomporphs (the pear-shaped body type) and they subsist on grains, rice, and beans. Yet, not many fat people, at least not like here, and there are fewer endomorphs in the US than say India, Pakistan, and much of Latin America. Their diets and regimens help promote a healthy hormonal balance in those places.
I have a question. Have any of you ever known a middle aged guy with a pot belly who lost it? Im not sure i have. I know there are many before and after photos in diet commercials and ads of adult men who have lost their pot bellies. But they could be faked or photoshopped as we all know. I dont know any man in real life who has lost his pot belly.
Perhaps its easier to lose weight when you are in your youth, but not when you are older and your metabolism slows down. At that point, it seems like the weight is fixed and refuses to go away, as though it were a part of you and has become your consciousness.
So do any of you know someone in real life who has lost his pot belly during middle age? Is that even really possible?

It's very easy to lose weight, just don't eat. I have started a new diet which is simple and guaranteed to work. I have a target weight that I want to stay near. So every Monday I stop eating and don't eat again until I am below my target weight. I have been doing this for a few weeks now and it works out to not eating for 2 or 3 days a week. This diet works by definition. And I had a bit of a belly before I started this, and it is under control now.
FUCKK NO! That will not work
Do not listen to fschmidt if you are serious about losing weight

Dear Sir Winston,
Eating less will cause your body to store fat. It is called Metabolism and it lowers when you age.
You increase your metabolism by running, weight lifting or cardio activity. People who exercise a lot will usually eat like pigs and still have low body fat. The reason fschmidt was able to lose weight by not eating is because he has a high Metabolism. Whereas other people who stop eating will get lowered Metabolism.
You Sir Winston are a busy man. If you do not have time to exercise. Getting rid of carbs from your diet is also successful. EAT LESS THAN 20 CARBS A DAY.
For all you people who believe the lie that is how much you eat and Metabolism does not exist.
Mayo Clinic medical doctors and experts say:
Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. During this complex biochemical process, calories in food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function.
Wtf is going on? The last 2 weeks ive been eating nothing but soup and salad, very healthy, yet my pot belly is still big and refuses to shrink! Wtf? Impossible! In theory i should have lost significant weight by now. This is illogical. Its as if my body refuses to lose weight and has a mind of its own, as if my fat wants to live! Where is my pot belly getting the energy from to maintain itself? Why belly fat so stubborn, like it has a mind of its own? Are some people just meant to be fat, like its destiny? Pot belly is so unattractive! Its ruining my love life! Does anyone have a logical explanation?!?!

It takes a long time to get rid of what took a long time to accumulate. Did you do ANY exercise during those 2 weeks?
As always, i strongly recommend swimming, it works your whole body and targets the belly. Things like jogging just strengthen your legs and don't target the belly, and crunching might give you a six-pack, hidden under the fat lol.
1)Too much of one thing defeats the purpose.
2)Everybody is full of it. What's your hypocrisy?
I have had major problems wit belly fat, I was like 30 % body fat and most on my stomach. Exercise ,gym, and diet and it will change fast. It works but you have to do it and get into it as a way of life. I am meeting my goals slowly but surely...... and I just play around at it.
Mine is gradually going. Around 1Kg a month now, but it is going. I threw away my old belt, and the new one is on the tightest notch.
I just eat less and I hardly ever eat: soda, potato chips, cakes or sugary bars (cereal bars, biscuits). In fact if you avoid anything that is sold in a vending machine you're on the right tracks.
I also only eat out of a bowl - no more plates.
You need to cut CARBS, and eat more PROTEIN and FAT. Also watch fruit as fructose is hard work for the liver.
But above all you need to change your relationship with food first. Weight loss *is* incredibly hard to do as the body is really good at maintaining a constant weight. But we men can crack it (women are useless at it lol).
Once your BMI is down to normal, then start going to the gym.
