Living very cheap was extremely important to me, starting out. It meant that I had
finally escaped the rat race! I didn't have to work
at all if I didn't want to. It is hard trying to make it as an independent comic artist or animator with the California cost of living. This often meant that projects got rushed out the door to make a quick buck, or it was back to the grind in a "real job". How is one to create some great masterpiece if they never have the time to sit and think of something great? When I first went to Philippines, I had time to think, plan or just
rest if I so desired.
I never felt like the government was involved in my life. Maybe I was just too used to the way things were, though, needing licenses and permits for every little thing. Even in so-called communist China I don't feel the hand of government involved in anything I am doing on a day to day basis. Only at visa time.
Cheap sex being available isn't necessarily a good thing. I got caught up in that my first trip abroad and nearly destroyed everything. Luckily it gets old after a few months. I can still clearly and frankly remember the day that I was banging a gorgeous chick, raw even, and thinking,
"This is boring." I would have never dreamed such a thing to be possible while living in America, but here I was, in the "heat of the moment" and not deriving pleasure from it. Not long after, I moved to Korea and discovered a new path. Family.
Living with my Korean girlfriend's family, I discovered something else I really valued, that was missing in America and that I wanted to add to my life. Of course, living with an entire family I also discovered that it takes a much shorter period of time of
not getting any to reverse that feeling of being bored with sex.
Eventually, I continued to build up my online business, I went to Japan, back the Philippines for a long stretch and then finally to China. What I learned is that above all, the most important thing you have is
time. You don't get that in America. The next important thing is
people. This is not stressed enough in American life, where family means little and people are out for themselves. The essential ingredient in everything is
balance! I can find that out here. It was nowhere to be found in America.
